Southgate about to pick the wrong side - again

Similar thoughts to this, I loved him as a player with us, I'd put him in my all time Boro 11 and probably make him captain as well.

Given an impossible job by Gibson here or at least a job that was too much for someone with no experience.

He's done brilliantly with England on the whole, created a club like atmosphere with the players and is the best I've seen with the media.

The only concern I have with him is his team selections and tactics. I know we got to a world Cup semi final but the run to the semi's wasn't the most difficult. We came up short against Belgium in the groups and he wasn't able to change the momentum of the game against Croatia in the semi's.

I'm not saying he's a bad manager and he's obviously learnt a lot since his time here, but I'm not gonna proclaim he's the greatest England of all time either.

I think todays team (rumoured) is a bit baffling and people are entitled to question it and I'm still not convinced about Southgate's ability if we come up against a really top team.

Most goals at a tournament in 2018 from England since 1966. Most goals by any team in qualifying for the Euros. Second youngest team at the Euros. First team to score 3 against Spain away in decades..

I agree the stats don’t suggest a negative conservative approach.
But he is pragmatic when he needs to be, for example we were unadventurous when we played Belgium and that was the right decision as we were the first side to beat them in a competitive match in about three years.

I agree. The overall stats gpg and win %suggest he is not a negative coach.

I am a scot and this is only the second time I have really got behind England and that it's largely due to Southgate.
 
Southgate’s team very predictable, cautious don’t lose tactics for me. Grealish and Bellingham should be starting for Fidel or mount and definitely Phillips 🤣. I fear we won’t get out of our own half as Croatia dominate the ball. Southgate is taking us nowhere….

if they don’t feature from the start I predict an early train home
Plus: if he goes with maguire at any point in this tournament it’ll be a huge risk and the equivalent of playing his 4th choice Centre half because he hasn’t played for 4-5 weeks and won’t be match fit when facing the best forwards who will be very sharp

Maguire might as well be sent home with Henderson

Excellent decision making from selection made. Not the team i would have gone with but he made the right calls clearly. He showed how good a manager he is today. Sensible substitutions at the right times, the players worked hard in that heat. Phillips had an excellent game and playing that role with Rice protecting the CB’s worked perfectly.

Well done England, deserved the victory and Croatia were not allowed to dominate possession which was a big part of the result.

Exactly this. Learned the lessons of three years ago. You don't win international tournaments without possession
 
He put his neck on the line big time with that team.

Would have been easy for him to have gone with the likes of Sancho and Grealish in order to have given the fans and media what they wanted but he picked a team he felt would give us the best opportunity to win.

Sterling match winning goal and a regular threat

Foden hit the post and carried the ball with ease

Southgate got the value of creating an 11 that could nullify the Croatian threat and create 5 or 6 great chances.

Jude got a few minutes, but any argument that he should have played in front of Philips today is ludicrous. I've given Philips pelters in teh past but he was superb tooday.

But most of all Southgate should his abilities, his tactical awareness, his intelligence, his pragmatism, his understanding of how to learn from previous games and not make the same mistake and most of all not to listen to fans that think stood on a terrace is an education in football tactics.

The early train home might be going to Zagreb but I don't think it will be going to any English towns.
 
It’s a long tournament after what’s essentially been a long season and a half, there’s going to be key roles for everyone to play!

In my head I was willing some earlier changes mainly because of the heat, but spot on Gareth!
 
We live in a world populated by douche bags. I’m one of them. The problem isn’t the fact that the majority of us are douche bags, but that most douche bags don’t realise that’s what they are. The OP in this thread being the perfect example.
