I made the right call as usual 🔥

"Bellingham is a kid and Grealish is difficult to accommodate unless you build your team around him. I'm happy with Sterling and Foden in this game..."

Same today as then, we have better players and more to choose from. We bottled it on the big occasion.
I don't think we did, we still had the best chances but Croatia converted the big moments, but it wastn't people bottling, it was just poor exercusion and that is almost always fatigue. We struggled with energy because they played smarter than us and passed the ball around and that ran our legs away. This time we did that to them.

It was a tactical and technical failure not a psychological one. in 2018. We have even better technical and tactical players now than then with players like Young and Ali replaced with Foden and Mount, we played smarter today.

Kane puts his easy chance away and it's 2-0 against the world cup finalists. First ever win in a first game of the Euros.

Croatia have Brozovic, Kovacic and Modric in midfield, you need to counter that and going gung hi would just let them pass us to death in the wilting heat. We got the job done today with minimal fuss.
Don't forget Foden against the post, Sterlings miss kick on edge of 6 and sterling blazing over from 12 yards. That's 4 really good chances on tp of Kane's miss and Sterlings goal. On chances 3-0 wouldn't have flattered us, although might have seemed harsh on the overall match

England were clearly the better team against a decent side. Some folks just want to justify their pre game opinion.

I'll take a few more of those lucky, under performing wins please and enjoy the tournament.

Don't worry fellas you'll get your chance to moan on Friday when Scotland give you a beating.
I agree. Was very nice to get a good win against a good side. It could have been a lot worse. I'm expecting a very tough game on Friday. We should be winning on paper but football ain't played on paper.

The Scotland fans seem very confident this year, let's see how they do tonight.

I remember similar confidence when they used to regularly qualify for tournaments but they never used to live up to their expectations.

I'm pretty sure that they've never got past the group stage in a major tournament. They've got a good chance of doing that if they win today.

Scotland have never gotten out of a group at a tournament.

I am not sure it's confidence its just some natural excitement at facing the auld enemy. Scotland won't win the tournament but bloodying englands nose would be fun.

Pre game I thought Southgate got the team selection wrong. I still fancied us to win, but I wasn't as confident as I would've been if I saw Shaw/Chillwell at LB and Sterling on the bench.

However, full credit to Gareth with the inclusion of Sterling, Phillips and Trippier at LB. He got it spot on and Croatia barely threatened us.

I can't even remember Pickford being called into action.

Fair play to Gareth. First time we've won our opening game at the Euros and it was our most difficult group game on paper.

Great subs and tactics too. He got everything correct yesterday.

Onwards and upwards.

I think I'd like to go on record now as saying, if we should win this tournament, it will be despite Southgate, not because of him.

It will not be because he has consistently given youth a chance over more experienced players during his tenure, thus producing a squad rich in international experience while retaining its youth.
It will not be because he has fostered the best team spirit in the England camp in at least 25 years.
it will not be due to his eloquent but passionate leadership of the England camp.

He will clearly have been the beneficiary of outrageous good fortune; the blunderer who happened to be in the right place at the right time. I know this because he lost a cup match against Cardiff 13 years ago.

I still believe everything I said just as much as I did when I said it.

I will not climb down.
I will crawl back into my lair and brood.
If and when a bad result occurs, I will resurrect this post, and claim I was obviously right all along.
Mwahahahaha.
