Anyone think houchen will get back in?

A media savvy labour candidate had such a lot to get stuck into Houchen for. There were loads of opportunities for political attention grabbing stunts and sound bites. It’s f!xking galling that they’ve not been able to topple him. Where was the dialogue with the Lib Dems? Surely it would have been in both parties’ interests for the Lib Dems to field a non campaign?!
I can’t look at local media for fear of seeing that gurning, smug, crustacean botherer’s face!
Hey ho, let’s all look to the NAO for solace. I guess this result just delays judgement day.

This is largely on Labour. I live in Redcar and work form home and I haven't seen any canvasser's out for this. Other than this board, I've seen very little about the election at all - for something so important to the area Labour haven't done anything to inspire the population.

I'm not sure how much the Turley factor played into this but I'd imagine it wasn't zero. I won't vote for Turley in the GE but I voted Labour last night in both Mayoral and PCC as the only viable alternative.

Labour might get more of a shock at the GE than anyone is expecting if this result is anything to go by.

The best thing Labour can do is offer unconditional backing until/unless any wrongdoing is uncovered.

Go after him but don't give him any excuses for not delivering on his promises.

Be very vocal publically about backing him to the hilt. Do nothing to deliberately hinder him other than apply the law of the land. It's the only way the lies around e.g. a new hospital will be put to bed.

It'll be a major blow to the area when Labour don't sort the hospitals out themselves, but Ben has it covered so why should/would they.

Time to not get old, not get ill etc.
I'm already old, focusing on winning the lottery now, only hope.

I suppose one potential positive of him remaining Mayor is that once a Labour Government start having a proper look into what has gone on with Teesport and the rest he isn't going to be able to hide away in the shadows and will hopefully be held accountable for any wrong doing.

An election is an election, doesn’t matter what it’s for. You have got to work to get the f’n vote out.

A staggering result and yes I say that as someone who "left the area" (and is indeed less and less likely to ever return).

I think it was largely expected but once it happens you do have to take stock and think who has considered his candidacy and surmised "there is someone with mine, and the areas, best interests at heart".

huge vote swing though. labour just didn't do enough on the socials to discredit houchen. he was on facebook commenting on everything

A lot of people are saying the same thing but I dint think this is gonna be high up on the list of priorities for an incoming Labour government. Lets not forget there is no love lost between McDonald and Starmer either, that dynamic could affect the urgency in which NAO are involved. Lets say they get to it in year 2 of government, it takes 12 months to complete...that's 3 years of BH...if the writing is on the wall, off he pops after 11 years as Mayor... the opportunity to do something was this election!

I don’t care… Tories don’t belong here in Middlesbrough, we’re not a political tool for their wealth or career, and I hope for the best for our people, and they’re aren’t it….

Anyone got an appointment for the new hospital he’s building.

Not that the old one is falling down and not fit for purpose under the conservatives watch.

I can’t believe the people of this area.
