Anyone think houchen will get back in?

WTF were the lib dems thinking fielding a candidate

Considering this is their trade, they really don't get it do they, they might as well have been putting up vote houchen signs.

He's only won by sheer apathy!

The turn out is so low, most who backed him last time clearly don't want to again but can't bring themselves to go out and vote for someone else...

For me its as bad a reflection on local Labour as it is on Ben Houchen.
It's "only" down 3% on the turnout from his landslide win last time.

Most people can rarely be arsed to vote in local elections.

I think it's an election that Labour could have won with a more inspiring candidate, but the swing is still looking promising for the future.
This is largely on Labour. I live in Redcar and work form home and I haven't seen any canvasser's out for this. Other than this board, I've seen very little about the election at all - for something so important to the area Labour haven't done anything to inspire the population.

If Reform or the Lib Dems fielded a decent candidate they could win. Turley is widely disliked.
I'm not sure how much the Turley factor played into this but I'd imagine it wasn't zero. I won't vote for Turley in the GE but I voted Labour last night in both Mayoral and PCC as the only viable alternative.

Labour might get more of a shock at the GE than anyone is expecting if this result is anything to go by.

So we're going to have a Labour gov with a mayor they're going to be desperate to hammer

sigh
The best thing Labour can do is offer unconditional backing until/unless any wrongdoing is uncovered.

Go after him but don't give him any excuses for not delivering on his promises.

Be very vocal publically about backing him to the hilt. Do nothing to deliberately hinder him other than apply the law of the land. It's the only way the lies around e.g. a new hospital will be put to bed.

It'll be a major blow to the area when Labour don't sort the hospitals out themselves, but Ben has it covered so why should/would they.

Time to not get old, not get ill etc.

looking at the figures it would only have made a difference in the Middlesbrough count.

if we get a labour government then he can blame them for not funding his hospital. its written already.

if we keep a tory government then it might get a lick of paint
