Sunderland vs Coventry

The club should have paid for Gyokeres.
It is absurd to think Tavernier or Spence should have gone for more, yet think Gyokeres is not worth £15m.
Open your F***ing eyes.
Will he be a one season wonder….ffs…there are some dull ***** about.
I think we need to be less nice and more aggressive in our transfer dealings.

As Bournemouth were openly courting tav in the media and still are.

Same with spurs and spence.

We are on the same page indeedio and have been all along
I have said this lad is top quality and today proved it
I would rather have a striker who has a bad game but scores goals rather than the other way round

We will have to see what happens before the end of the window but I imagine we are using a Brentford/Norwich model now. If clubs want to pay good money for our players then we will sell them and replace them for cheaper. I don't think you'll be seeing us spend £10m+ on a player at this level and rightly so in my opinion, it's risky and if we don't go up we then end up having to cut our cloth for the next few seasons before we can go again.

There are good players all over the world that haven't reached their potential value yet, those are the players we should be going for, not the ones that are already established at this level for crazy money.

It is not about spending £10m plus on a bad player - like we have done a few times - it is about paying £10m plus on the right player.

Gyokeres is the right player, not even up for debate if you've been watching this lad.

I'm pretty sure whenever we've spent £10m+ before we've not scouted them and thought he's a really bad player lets spend £15m on him. There's no margin for error at those prices, the resale value for Gyokeres looks slim. I think he's a great player but it's risky and I wouldn't go for it.

Being able to turn players over for profit consistently is very important for a club like us, for Gyokeres to go for more than £15m he would have to score a lot of goals and we'd have to get promoted, that's far too much to bank on. I think Danjuma is the most expensive non-English striker to be sold by a Championship side at £21m, after that you're looking at Chris Wood and Neal Maupay at £14m. There's no room for growth.

There's a 0.1% chance we're signing Gyokeres, it's just too much money.

Tavernier and Spence went to Premier League clubs, they can easily afford and justify the cost.
We don't have parachute payments to cover it.

I think Coventry are doing right by themselves to price teams out, mind, even though I wish we could get him here.

Speculate to accumulate, he’s the type of player we need to get us up into the premiership, include the money we got for Spence and he’s going to cost us 3M
The club have a position on him, a goal against Sunderland isn’t likely to change that.

I presume they have asked about him.

If they were quoted £18 million would you pay it?

The club just might not be able to afford him.

Exactly ivan Toney case in point.
I'm pretty sure that deal had a lot of add ons based on goals and promotion etc. That kind of deal I wouldn't mind, if you get promoted then you have the money to pay it anyway but £15m up front is absurd.

18M no.

There is not only one way.
A blend makes most sense.

Some frees, some loans, some prospect signings; but the ability to spot absolute quality, back your judgement and put your money where your mouth is is key.
If Gyokeres hits 20 plus this season then he will go to the PL- either with us or without - and for a fee well over £25m.
If we sign him our chances of promotion greatly improve. Even if he doesn't score 20 plus we will still have the best striker in the Championship.
If he fires us up then he would be fit to lead our line in the PL - one less new signing we would desperately need.

This utter bull **** about needing to operate like Norwich and turn EVERY player is ridiculous. They don't, nor do Brentford.
Ironically buying Gyokeres for £15m to me is investing in a young player whose value will explode - just from a higher base because he IS that good.

Do you know he is available for £15 million?

I think it’s a given most Boro fans who have seen him would like him in the team.

Do you know we can afford it?

I don’t assume just because we have sold Spence and likely Tav we can spend £10 million plus on a player.

Wilder spoke on Friday about the intricacies of FFP and that the chairman would not put the club at risk

This is 100% spot on. We have had an unexpected 20 mill from Djed Spence. Get it spent on this lad he is quality

I would structure a deal to pay £20m for him.
In the way Spurs have with Spence.
Would I have swapped Spence for Gyokeres in effect - absolutely not a problem.
The club CAN afford him. They have spent nowt yet.

But there is absolutely no guarantee, in our system, that he would hit 20 goals . None. He's playing in whatever system at Coventry and it works for him.
We need at least 5 players in so blowing pretty much all of the transfer budget on one player who may/may not be a success is madness. The price Coventry are asking (£18-20m if you believe the chatter🤷🏻‍♂️) is out of our reach. And how much would we have to pay him - a £15-20m player would be looking at £50k week surely - double our top earner.
Why no go for Riis at Preston.......scored 20 in a worse team and would cost half of what Gyokeres would?
