Saturdays matches off - Official from EFL

Yes but for all the people on here who want games to go ahead, there will also be other fans, players, stewards, referees, bus drivers etc who want to stay at home or buy flowers, go to Buck Palace or whatever and do not want games to go ahead.

She was the head of state, the country is in national morning, this is a once in 70 year event and I agree with all sport being called off for this weekend only.
So why is the Rugby, GNR going ahead? Busses will still be running as will every other essential service in the country so most people wont have that luxury. If players didnt want to play then surely thats up to the individual

But there'll surely be a minutes silence at the next game anyway so you still have that problem.

Liverpool are prime candidates for it and they're playing at home on Tuesday. Not sure how 3 days makes a difference if that's what they're concerned about.
Only likely to be worse now.

I am not in mourning. I am sad she died but I am not in mourning. She was someone I did not know and who never had any noticable impact on my life. I am just carrying on the same as I always do. Except now I will stay a bit later in the pub as I don't have to get up at 5:00am to set off for Blackpool on the 6:05 train(didnt book that one but Transpennine cancelled our train).

Public school rugger buggers. They are the establishment, not peasants, so the rules don't apply.
Disrespectful b***ds 🙄

You'd think the FA etc might have had discussions with other pro sports before making a decision. But that would require a degree of competence of course.

I'm pleased the Rugby is going ahead, makes it a bit embarrassing for them.

Might get myself along to a jolly musical at the theatre - all still going ahead I believe with a sensible interlude to pay respect.

I wonder if fans can group together & sue / claim off the EFL / PL for their hotel / train tickets as they've cancelled when there is zero need to do so... if they can't get their money back from the vendors..
  • no requirement to cancel or postpone events and sport fixtures, or close entertainment venues [ via the BBC ]

If you knew the history of the people of Liverpool you would understand their justifiable reasons for despising the establishment, and fair play to them for that.

To be calling off kids games when the rugby and ballet go ahead does feel very 'them and us'

I do understand it and support it. I didn't say otherwise.

However this week would not be the time for it. I think the vast majority of their fans would respect a minutes silence to be fair.

I've been vocal about the disrespect shown by some members of this board but I do think the games should have gone ahead.

I have a friend who lost his mother on the day he was supposed to play in the Eliis Cup Final at the old Normanby Rd Ground, South Bank. His sisters told him to go and play and win it for his mother - he did, but it must have been hard for him. I don't think he showed her any lack of respect by playing in the game.
My brother in law was desperate to win the Ellis Cup....came close but didn't quite manage to win the finals.

I can understand professional football cancelling the weekends fixtures but to me cancelling activities at grassroots level is OTT and financial inconvenience to millions its really not on.

A blanket postponement of all sports this weekend I could understand (but not agree with), however, the fact that certain sports are going ahead and others have been called off makes absolutely zero sense. PL/EFL have got this all wrong.

As others have said, a silence, a rendition of the National Anthem and black armbands all round would have shown the necessary thoughts and respect.

It's a shame for those who had made travel/accommodation arrangements however this is about marking the passing of a great monarch who reigned for 70 years.

Yes, an alternative could have been a minutes silence and then the playing of the national anthem however could people in this country be trusted to respect and observe it, especially when you consider there are many in this country of the Republican persuasion. I believe a minutes silence was disrespected by German fans at a German game last night.

Surely we can all manage for one weekend without sport.

Apparently not judging by a lot of comments here
