Saturdays matches off - Official from EFL

Sounds like it will be a night at the opera for me, dear boy. Or maybe a Saturday matinee to make up for the lack of football.

Was hopefully someone at BT Sport may have done the sensible and televised all Bundesliga games again, a la Covid but it appears not.

Annoyingly there isn't a standout televised European fixture this weekend, Marseille v Lille or Monaco v Lyon look the pick of the bunch.

It's a shame for those who had made travel/accommodation arrangements however this is about marking the passing of a great monarch who reigned for 70 years.

Yes, an alternative could have been a minutes silence and then the playing of the national anthem however could people in this country be trusted to respect and observe it, especially when you consider there are many in this country of the Republican persuasion. I believe a minutes silence was disrespected by German fans at a German game last night.

Surely we can all manage for one weekend without sport.
Why should we have to? Especially when other sports can continue. If there was a genuine reason not to play then fair enough

Don't agree with the cancellation and I suspect it's for the benefit of other countries and their perception of us at this time of morning, all the other sports won't get much coverage overseas while English football will be televised around the world.

Liverpool were due to play at home tomorrow. Could their fans be trusted to observe and respect a minutes silence, especially with their "Scouse not English" attitude? Would they have respected the National Anthem being played or would many of them boo, as they did at Wembley last season?

If the decision had have been made for the games to go ahead I would have also supported it, but ultimately I recognise that whatever decision has been made has been made with the intention of showing a great monarch and our head of state of 70 years respect. I'm happy to respect and accept that.

Who cares if they boo or not? Do we just cancel their games indefinitely in case their fans do something that upsets someone? Hardly justification for cancelling hundreds of football games costing the economy billions

It is possible to show respect and not put life on hold for weeks

Apparently not judging by a lot of comments here
I freelance in live sport broadcasting/Football streaming so tomorrow is a lost days work for me - many Outside Broadcast/Camera people are freelance also. Fixtures will be rearranged but doesn't mean I can work when they are rescheduled. But at least the Rugby and Ballet are still on ...

FSA have posted a statement on the postponements and within that statement they mention that they will be collating advice about any entitlements regarding expenses

Football postpones fixtures

Posted on 9th September 2022
It was with great sadness that the Football Supporters’ Association received yesterday’s announcement that the Queen had died peacefully at Balmoral. Following that news, the football authorities today said that, from the Premier League down to the grassroots game, football matches would be postponed. The FSA’s response to football’s announcement is below.

The Football Supporters’ Association said:

“We believe football is at its finest when bringing people together at times of huge national significance – be those moments of joy or moments of mourning.
“Our view, which we shared with the football authorities, is that most supporters would have liked to go to games this weekend and pay their respect to the Queen alongside their fellow fans.
“Not everyone will agree, so there was no perfect decision for the football authorities, but many supporters will feel this was an opportunity missed for football to pay its own special tributes.
“As usual, the Football Supporters’ Association will be collating advice about supporters’ entitlements regarding expenses incurred relating to postponed games this weekend.”

Somebody above made the point that it's probably been done for the benefit of other countries and their perception of us at this time of morning, and that will probably be a factor.

As I said, imagine if the minutes silence was disrespected at several games. Unfortunately that would be what the media would choose to focus on and it would also paint football fans in a bad light.

We'd get the usual comments, "Rugby fans across the country observe minutes silence and once again football fans bring shame of the nation".

It really doesnt matter though, whenever the first game is played they will have a silence which will give people the chance to disrespect it then. We cant just cancel everything just incase

More bothered about millions being lost through missed games over what the medias perception of football fans will be

Mmmm.. 70 years on the throne, a lifetime of dedicated service, no retirement at 65 for HRH and people seem apoplectic with rage that the football community has seen fit to postpone one game to fully recognise such service and devotion? I think it is absolutely the appropriate thing to do and grounds all around GB ringing out with cheers tomorrow would have been completely disrespectful. I really don’t think we as football fans have been asked to sacrifice too much in return for a lifetime of service. Use Sunday morning to take your young ones to the local cenotaph to remember the Queen and others who gave so much for us.

I understand the frustration but I also understand why the decision has been made and I said, I would have supported whichever decision was made.

We could do that next weekend, when the matches will also probably be postponed, justifiably, because of the funeral.

People are being asked to sacrifice hundreds of pounds in a cost of living crisis for absolutely no reason this weekend.

Nothing is happening for the Queen tomorrow, Sunday or Monday, but every match on those days has been cancelled.

Most other sports are carrying on.

Utter rubbish

Why then is all football of every level off it’s nothing to do with overseas tv at all. It’s the FA making a decision.

football will return next week. The football authorities felt just two days after the Queens passing was too early to have crowds celebrating and cheering. I agree, many other will have the same or different opinions. Sadly for MFC fans this falls in a day we were due to be away at Blackpool and we will face hardship as a result, I will get a full refund on travel and accommodation but understand others won’t. It is frustrating and upsetting for some but balance it against 70 years of service to the country and billions into the economy and moaning about the postponement of one game sounds very selfish and ungrateful.

So why can golf, cricket, rugby all go ahead? Shops will be full of people as will pubs and restaurants. Why can all of that go ahead but football cant? Worth remembering the majority of the country wont really be bothered about this enough to sit and mourn all weekend, surely the choice should be left with the individual

Nothing is happening tomorrow, Sunday or Tuesday in regards to the Queen.
It's not being cancelled to allow a commemoration or celebration of her life.

Arsenal fans were celebrating a goal withins hours of her dying yesterday.

What disrespect is there for doing so 2, 3 and 4 days later?

The fact other sports are going ahead, and people are losing out on hundreds makes it even more nonsensical.
