New car

I had a new 718 Boxster for a year, the best thing I've ever driven.

I had the "Standard" 300 BHP one with the auto and it was rapid, didn't see any need for the S, and I thought it handled better than the older 911. I think the new 911 has the same chassis as the 718, so that will of course be better, but I don't see how it's worth it for another 40k.

I think the Chrono gives you the dial on the steering wheel for the different modes, but I rarely used these. There is a button in the centre though, which gives you 30 seconds of high revs, and that is really good fun.

Get one with a rear camera if you can, mine just had the sensors, and they're not that great, which contributed to me dinging the rear diffuser on mine.

Also, get the adaptive cruise, if you can, that saved me twice from a likely crash (neither my fault), where the car reacted far faster than I ever could.

I only sold mine as I wasn't getting enough use out of it, as I didn't like driving to meetings in it, and it forced even less use out of the Westfield in the garage. I also didn't like putting my golf clubs on the passenger seat, so I've now got a 430 Gran Coupe.
Thanks for this!

So the Chrono pack isn't worth it? seems to be the most expensive option so good to tick it off the list. I'll look out for an adaptive cruise version although haven't seen one yet. I must admit adaptive cruise is the one thing I regretted skipping on my current car.
Hope I can find one with a rear camera too. Current car has auto park so I've got out of the habit of being able to actually park!

I'm going to look ago one next week which doesn't have the camera or the cruise so I'll keep an eye out for other cars.

There's about 270 listed nationwide in AutoTrader from 2016 to 2019 models, I had a good flick through yesterday. I know you may prefer an authorised dealer, but there really are some good deals to be had. There was a 2018 with less than 13k on the clock with rear cam (didn't mention CC) for £32k, it was an auto though which iirc isn't your thing

I'd suggest going along to msin dealer and having a look.

The sport chrono is a very popular option, on the models where it isn't standard. Same for sports exhaust, adaptive suspension and some interior options, such as the Bose stereo.

The right spec will definitely help in residuals if you can ever part with it later on 🙂

Actually (hopefully Wev can confirm) the double clutch auto on the Boxster is supposed to be really good. Do you have a link to the car? That sounds a really good price for a car that age with those miles. I think i'll need the rear cam, my parking is garbage at the best of times.

I wish I'd posted the link yesterday as I can't seem to find it again. AutoTrader is a bit rubbish when you 'sort by' as it doesn't!

Well, it's hard to say. The one I bought was already built, so I didn't get much choice with the options (other thank picking that car out of a list), it had about 14k worth of extras, but the only ones that was really "worth it" were the PDK and the adaptive cruise. The sport/ madness button on the centre of the chrono selector dial on the steering wheel is good fun, but I probably only used it 10 times in a year. If you put your foot flat to the floor it soon picks up anyway, it just doesn't get primed like pressing the button in advance. The chrono also has something to do with the sports exhaust, but I never noticed much of a difference with that. Also the chrono is apparently 0.6 seconds faster 0-60, but I probably wouldn't believe that either.

If I was you, I wouldn't have the chrono as deal breaker, but if you see one you like, that has it, then fair enough. I reckon most would have that though, as it's only a 1.5k option, which for Porsche, isn't that bad. Porsche gave some spiel about cars with chrono end up being worth more, but that seems like BS, just like when they say "we'll give you a good price to buy it back from you".

I just couldn't think of any reason to select PDLS and PASM as options though. There's zero point in the latter, as the handling is unreal without it anyway. It might make a difference on a track, but who does that? PDLS is pointless, as the lights are xenon anyway.

Don't be worried about buying one private, or not from a Porsche stealer, I sold mine private and we transferred the funds in the buyers bank.

Thanks for the info Wev brilliant stuff. Yeah it was the PDLS+ lights I was interested in, I think they are LED. I really don’t want to go back to xenon headlights after my last two cars had LED the difference is (literally) night and day!

I never noticed much light difference between standard, PDLS and PDLS+ to be honest, but the LED ones did look better.

AH, maybe they aren't the best implementation then. Mercedes do stunningly good LED headlights.

A dealer should be able to show you the difference, although probably not that easily this time of year, as they're only open when it's daylight.
Good point! Thanks again for the PASM advice. I thought that'd be a handy thing but I guess you're right, it's a peach of a car handing wise anyway

No probs, yeah, if a "standard" 718 doesn't handle well enough for you, then you kind of have to wonder what you're intending to do with it.

Apparently the car isn't back from getting it's Porsche approved checks yet. That's not a good sign!

I think Artie is right I'll have a look at his auto trader stuff.

ST, I have no idea if these are any good, but they are at least, of the beaten track. The Renault Alpine 210 turbo. They look a bit like a hairdressers car, but I really like the look.

TBH I just dont like the look of a porsche.

Or, and you will have to stick with me here, what about a project Vaydor. The kits have just gone back on sale and for $15,000 you get the basic kit. They are extremely fugly cars. I love em.

do you mean the A110? I thought the 210 turbo was an old racer? I think I may have got them confused.

Anyway, Porsche didn't get back to me about the test drive which is really dissapointing. May have saved an argument though the other half REALLY doesn't like the Boxster. Although sh does like a Cayman though so I guess my dreams of open top motoring are out.

Randomly I'm test driving something completely different today. A Tesla model 3 long range.

Not sure how I feel about this. The tech looks amazing and it'll save me a fortune in fuel and car tax (in the first year) and the like. I just can't get over the fact it looks so incredibly dull. I think it comes in three colours: Brown, Beige, and a slightly lighter brown.

Porsche are bad like that, the service is quite poor, compared to what you would get by spending similar money at BMW or Audi etc. It's like Porsche think they're doing you a favour by letting you have one of their cars. I got asked to pick mine up about 5 minutes before closing, and then they pretty much shoed me out the door.

Rang Rover/ Land Rover are the worst though, they didn't even speak to me when I went in twice a couple of years back, and again last year. Each time there were about 3 "salesmen" doing nothing. In the end, last time I left my number with the girl on the desk (when she finally arrived at it, after flirting with one of the salesmen), and asked her to get one of the salesmen to give me a call when they had some free time, seeing as they must be really busy, they never bothered.

Do you have to go to Newcastle to test drive the Tesla? I've been considering the Model 3, but you're right it doesn't look as good as it should from the outside. It juts looks like most American cars do, pretty poor. It's strange the Tesla, as you would think it would be more targeted a European or Asia, seeing as these ares are more "eco-friendly" than the US. The only reason I've not discounted it due to looks are because there is no benefit in kind now, will be cheap to run and will no doubt hold onto it's value. It's going to be practically free compared to any other similarly priced petrol/ diesel.

ST, I had to go back and forth to Amsterdam for a year. All the cab drivers drove Tesla Model 3's. I loved them. My mate had one and he hated it. You pays your money. Oh I also think you can get them in 4 different shades of white too.
