McNair - Right Back

How many challenges has he committed to and lost as the last in line central defender over the seasons he has history. Its a fundamental flaw in his game and makes him a very poor defender.

Neither McNair nor Crooks are Carrick players. They're not bad, but they're not what's needed for what he's trying to build.

Needs must though, and he'll still use them when he has to because he'll appreciate their qualities, even if they're not ideal. Long term though, anytime we see them starting it's just an indicator that were not the finished article yet.

thats a good point.

McNair made a mistake with that tackle. He committed himself when he didn't need to.

But that mistake should not have led to a goal. The cross rolled right across the penalty area with at least four red shirts not making any effort to stop it.

One error compounded by another.

that's a little harsh, players had to shuffle over to cover for McNairs error, and were trying to cover from an out of position start. It was McNaits error. The only other error I would include is giving the ball away cheaply froma throw in before the goal. Can't remember if it was Coulson or McGree though,

I feel a little sorry for McNair, he is the type of player who has the ability to play in several positions and do a job, He is best as a CD in a back 3 where he has freedom to maraud forwards. He has a decent shot, can take a set piece etc.

Problem is we no longer play a back 3, he looks uncomfortable in a back 2 as he lacks a bit of pace and so gets used as a filler across the park. The issue is his wages and contract for that role are a mismatch. Yesterday he made the mistake of lunging in and failing to get the ball or failing that, the man. However to place all the blame for the goal on him was wrong, Millwall had a lot to do still to score from the left touchline. There were at least 4 Boro players in and around the box who were also culpable of ball watching and allowing Esse the freedom of the penalty area. He despatched the ball into the net without a Boro player near him, which was the biggest issue for me, not Paddy, although he must take some responsibility.

Some people have been praising Coulson, he did some good things, but equally he allowed their number 2 the freedom of the East stand wing in the first half, He used his pace on one occasion defensively really well, but far too often their number 2 was free to take the ball and cause issue, they nearly scored from one but a curling shot was wide.

So, when people talk about Paddy’s missed tackle, have a look at what was happening over where Esse was and see if perhaps others in the team should have done better too and bear some responsibility.

Watching the goal over again , where was Coulson ? Not in the area ?
His place was LB but he often played further up the pitch so left a gaping hole behind him . We need a proven player in there .
