You attack as a unit just like you defend as a unit. Yes we didn't let too many goals in last season, but we didn't score enough and part of that was the role of our defenders int eh build up. If your defenders are too slow at passing it invites the press and passing errors. If your defenders include right footers on the left, then the down the line pass will have the wrong shape and bend out of play, if they over or underlap, they have to play the cross with a weak foot or they have to check back losing that vital moment where the opposition haven't reacted. Football is a game of where small advantages over the course of a season can make huge differences.It hardly seems the most pressing matter though - last season we were joint 8th for goals against and joint 10th for goals scored. Nobody who finished above us scored fewer goals. Luton conceded more but finished 5 points better off.
We seem to have ripped up what was a solid defensive unit on a point of principle, and its hard to see how a left CB will add many more goals. I find it difficult to believe that just adding a bloke who is left footed will make us better at the back and going forward.
