Matt Clarke

I do miss the days of no transfer gossip. You got in from school or work and a mate said 'you've signed such and such' or you saw it on ceefax.

You now find out about a player signing days before the club announcing it. I miss a transfer being 'spoiler free' 😂
we still had 'spoilers' back in the day:

1978 - Argentina World Cup player (Captain?) Rene Houseman was going to sign... never did...
Kieth Gilespie was going to sign... went to Newcastle... as did Rob Lee... (closer to London :D )
George Best, played in Platty's testimonial & was going to sign.... looked superb in that cameo... however long past his... best

I'm getting the feeling that there is an issue with this transfer going ahead. I thought there might have been an official announcement by now.

Or am I being impatient??
impatient. Brighton have agreed the fee, he's agreed the salary, he's there now, had his medical. Seems like this could be done within 3 days of first being mooted. Considering Stoke have been trying to get him for about 6 weeks then seems we've done a decent job

Plus Wilder has history of keeping some signings under wraps, I presume to gain some advantage in terms of the next oppostions tactics.

Did anyone ever call? 50p per minute and it says "this message may involve a long call". How did they fill all the time before giving you the snippet of useless information to keep you on the call?
Yes we did after Rav was linked with Man U about 4 weeks after he had signed.

As viv said it was very cryptic.

If I’m remember the start was reading out the t and c of the call and then going through the the cryptic links snd a recap of yesterdays stories before the main story it self.

You used to get the first 30 seconds for free IIRC. Nice little introduction from John Hendrie and straight into it. I remember ringing loads when I was at college the deadline we signed Jan Aage Fjortoft and found out we signed him on there. 0891 12 11 81 👍🏻

We were going to sign Gillespie from Newcastle, announced it at the stadium before game v Newcastle and then realised he only had one leg. It was off by half time!

I found out we'd signed John Hendrie and Robbie Mustoe on the same day via ceefax. What a great day's business 👍

I remember thinking 'who the f*ck is Robbie Mustoe?'. I guess these days I'd be straight on YouTube watching his 1min 29secs highlights real lol.

Peter Beardsley was nicknamed Teletext by his playing colleagues, because he was always on it. Did it come out about 1982 when he was at Carlisle.

Up to 1989 there was no internet or sattelite TV and no mobile phones as we know now.

I used to read a transfer column in the Sunday People, especially for lower league transfers. There was no closing of transfer window until mid March.
