Mark Drury is NOT banned from interviewing by the club

Brownlee was a class act, very difficult to replace, probably impossible. He was besotted with the Boro, as in love as we are and it makes all the difference.
Nothing against Drury, I just don’t feel he’s as passionate.
Mind you, it’s a difficult job.

I preferred Malcolm Allison’s reaction during radio commentary, not sure it was against but they scored against us. It most have been an away match as I would have been there instead of listening. Anyway, I recall Allison saying “F***ing hell” as we conceded, there was a gap in commentary, after the brief pause, it resumed sans Allison.
I hope I’m not the only person who remembers this?
He got the boot for that if I recall correctly?

Oh yes I remember that was his last comms after they fought to bring him back after his suspension and who could forget his Random throw away line that “the referees a catholic” lol.

RIP big mal

Radio commentators job for me is give the listeners the best seat in the house and describe what is happening on the pitch, just my opinion but I don't think Drury does this well enough, when a team has a shot you don't know whether its gone in or not.

Im sure he means well and is more than competent, but one issue is his continuous audio-version of the Sky ticker-tape "latest scores". He constantly interjects "commentary" with the latest scores and then adds his own two=pennorth worth. That in itself isnt a problem.

The issue is the play is ongoing and I ticked off instances in recent games, where Boro had made a crucial pass or moved up the pitch and he had missed out a whole 30 seconds of play. That might not sound much - but in Radio Broadcast that amounts to 90 words [3 words per second average]. Add to that the rolling "funny" jibes at Maddo and he isnt the most listenable sports commentator. There are "highlights" on various youtube videos of Boro games, where the ticker-tape score commentary cant be removed - it just accentuates the problem.

Finally, when paying for video or audio commentary - its worth noting how much of the game is lost to the "funny" "banter": when paying for a product - BBC presenters need to know its not them we have paid to listen to - its the game.

Ali was a class above. I`de have Maddo and Bernie. They would be worth listening to!

Ali was all about the team and whats happening on the pitch and humble with it . Dury seems to think his irreverent funny observations are more important than the game itself. Its all ego with dury. Stick to the commentating on the game your not in the pub with your mates the patter is awful. For example i dont care how much maddo has eaten at half time this week its juvenile and unfunny and not worth airtime.

I remember that, was funny. I think he did it more than once as well. I think it was against Newcastle when Asprilla scored, might be wrong.

Commentating must be a tough gig. Listen to Brownlee's early ones. He changes a lot through the years. No idea how you would follow him.

Not sure as The catholic quip was def Man U away

Whenever you have to watch the away teams ifollow their commentary teams are absolutely atrocious. You can then hear what a good job Drury and Maddison do.

I like Drury, he does a decent job. Hes on local radio not working for a multi billion corporation. Explains the game well, brings some personality to what is a very difficult job especially if its a poor game and to be honest apart from last season its been bloody dull for years.

100% agree. They make a decent team. I don't mind the humour and the "bantz" (cringe emoji) the only thing I would ask him to work on is differentiating his commentary when we score and when the opposition score. Because otherwise he does a decent job.

I have this annoying and haphazard internal dialogue sometimes when watching football where I commentate on the action to myself. I dont know why - I may be mentally unstable.
Anyhow, I find that I am not a very good commentator to say the least. It's a really tough job to do in my opinion.

I like Drury. He's 'normal'. Yea, his jokes and banter is cringey from time to time but I like that. I'm not so precious that I cant just roll my eyes and have a little chuckle to myself and then move past it. Maddo brings good balance. Every clown needs a straight man.
When we lost Ali I hated the boro commentary, but appreciated it must have been an unenviable and daunting task, knowing how much Ali was adored by everyone. Give Drury a bit of grace. He's doing a technically tricky job, one that not a lot of people could pull off.

The Malcolm Allison incident was Newcastle at home in the 1995/6 season. It was a big match. He was working for Century Radio. It showed he cared, but he lost his job.
Maybe Drury needs to swear more to show he cares to get people onside. Maybe even go one better and do a Ron Atkinson.

I think no matter who does it, it will divide opinion. I remember Ali had a lot of critics and he was brilliant. So if I was him reading this thread I don’t think I’d worry to much.
