Mark Drury is NOT banned from interviewing by the club

I wouldn't be able to count the amount of times we walked back to the car fuming after a defeat and my dad would turn the radio on, only to immediately switch it off followed by "oh fuk off Ali". Then sit in silence all the way home :ROFLMAO: . Those were the days.
Ali was fabulous to listen to when winning not so after defeat when the last thing you want is positive spin

Yes, Coxy used to commentate too, as I remember it didn't him and Ali used to do it together at one point and take turns describing the action within the same game, or am I misremembering. It'd have been late 80's/early 1990's.
Yes that was the case from the 80's, possibly through to when it went to Century. Then Ali and Dave Allen used to share the commentary for a while from memory in the early Riverside years.

I'm sure they gave big mal a button to press before he spoke after the first swearing incident so he had to think before speaking. Didn't work. :D

Always liked Ali and Bernie. Balanced each other out. Interesting to hear that was what century FM were after. Probably viewed Bernie as our version of Hansen.

It is obvious that one constant doomster (sorry), Martin is it 🤔 is not a Boro fan and yet constantly Maddo gets wound up and agitated by it. The bloke is either a Mackem or its Paul Addison making it up just to wind Maddo up and get a reaction and the whole crew bar Maddo are in on it. I do hope it’s the latter actually.

I tell you what the last thing I want after a defeat is to listen to the opinion of the idiot doom mongers who rush to the phones to tell you what they've just seen on the radio. I rather liked Ali giving them short shrift.
If I recall correctly Malcolm Allison used to be brilliant at dealing with them. He used to just cut them off and move onto the next caller didn't he? 😂

No it was Alastair Brownlee and Dave Roberts - not Dave Allan who was the PR manager at Boro.
I think Dave Allen used to do "Inside the Riverside" on Century pre-match which was just a big advert for foam hands in the club shop.

Mind he's gone down in my estimation lately.

Dave ALLEN was the Irish comic - Dave ALLAN was the former Boro PR and Inside the Riverside - now co-owner Resolution Publishing.

On a theme of calling in to a radio phone in, I once called 606 on Five Live on a Sunday afternoon because I thought Steve Claridge was talking pure unadulterated dogsh*t about the Boro.

McClaren’s Boro had just beaten Arsenal 2-1 at the Riverside and played them off the park, but all Claridge wanted to talk about was how many injuries Arsenal had and that if those players had been available then they’d have beaten us.

“Arsenal were ravaged by injuries, they were missing Henry, Campbell and Ljungberg, all pivotal players.”

This absolutely boiled my p*ss so I rang up and got through and said “Boro were also ravaged by injuries, we were missing Viduka, Downing, Hasselbaink, Mendieta and Zenden and had no recognised right back available. What would the score have been if we’d have had those players fit?”

I don’t mind Claridge TBH but that was just lazy punditry on his part and I felt energised enough to question it. He wasn’t very impressed and things were nudged along gently, I said I was optimistic about Boro and he said something to appease me and then the line went dead. And you’re left asking yourself some very serious questions about what you’re doing with your life.

I’ve lived away from Teesside almost all my adult life and I certainly remember Ali getting pelters on here and elsewhere for years. I don’t mind Drury at all, when we’re doing ok it seems he’s one of the go-to whinge subjects - although I accept if you mentally tune out of the commentary and a goal goes in it’s not always obvious who it’s for, he could be a tad more partisan!

He’s certainly miles better than any opposition commentator I’ve had the misfortune of hearing, they are always very dry in comparison, but he’s inevitably in Ali’s shadow because we were truly spoiled, especially in the Century days as it was a few hours of just Boro - with Tees they have to fill time talking about other local clubs and sports and I’m just not that interested, but I accept others will be.
