Mark Drury is NOT banned from interviewing by the club

I think no matter who does it, it will divide opinion. I remember Ali had a lot of critics and he was brilliant. So if I was him reading this thread I don’t think I’d worry to much.
That is right. There was constant criticism of Ali Brownlee's rose tinted spectacles on this very message board. And I mean constant. What is now viewed as a strength was often a stick to beat him with at the time.

I remember that, was funny. I think he did it more than once as well. I think it was against Newcastle when Asprilla scored, might be wrong.

Commentating must be a tough gig. Listen to Brownlee's early ones. He changes a lot through the years. No idea how you would follow him.

I'm sure he swore once live on air, and then got given another chance, but blew it with another f bomb.

Mind you, there's something about the f bomb when said by these rough around the edges southerners that makes it sound great - faacken 'ell (just not when children could be listening).

That’s the thing about when he did it, it was no quick slip of the tongue, it was a proper OHHHH FAAACKIN HELLLL

Yeah i wasn't a fan of Brownlee to be honest, seemed a great bloke and cant knock his passion. Just didnt enjoy his commentary. Each to their own i suppose.

Just goes to show you can never please everybody as one person's ideal style of commentary will rub others up the wrong way. Take someone like Jonathan Pearce for instance, some love his style but he also gets loads of criticism too. Commentators and pundits can be marmite.

Big Mal was great. I remember hearing him do away games a kid - I was at the home games so never heard those. Didn’t Ali used to commentate with Gordon Cox at one point or was Coxy always the pitch-side reporter?

People like Big Mal and Maddo, to me it sounds like they’re enjoying the game and therefore enjoying their work. When Bernie did it he just sounded like he was p*ssed off most of the time, always moaning. I always felt he was one of those people who mistake criticism for intelligence.

Each to their own though.

He was the first one sided commentator I'd heard for club football. Not my cup of tea, I'd rather know what's happening in the game rather than what one side is doing.

Ali was the ultimate optimist. His passion really came through in his commentary and gave us some absolutely brilliant moments over the years. When we were playing well, I loved him.

On the other hand, when we were terrible and had been for weeks, and you'd listen to him on the way home trying to put a positive spin on it, it could be infuriating. All I wanted was for him to say it was shyte

Yes, Coxy used to commentate too, as I remember it didn't him and Ali used to do it together at one point and take turns describing the action within the same game, or am I misremembering. It'd have been late 80's/early 1990's.

But it was quite deliberate when he was at Century - that was how they thought it could work - one commentator totally biased, one possibly challenging his view.

Mark Drury isn't banned by the way. I tried to answer the opening question once but best underline the point.

Yeah he did have a warning and a second opportunity before dropping the F bomb again. Ever the opportunist he was on an advert for a local bathroom specialist the next week with the line...' if like me you've been sent for an early bath, head to....'

I’m pretty sure after his f bomb after he was re in stated Ali or Dave Roberts can be heard saying bye mal…

I dont think people were critcal of ali as a commentator, it was more the phone in's where he would cut fans off for saying anything remotely critical of the club. Lets be honest the club made some horrendous mistakes during Ali's time as broadcaster but even reasonable criticism of anything off the pitch to do with boro was shutdown by him.

I wouldn't be able to count the amount of times we walked back to the car fuming after a defeat and my dad would turn the radio on, only to immediately switch it off followed by "oh fuk off Ali". Then sit in silence all the way home :ROFLMAO: . Those were the days.
