Lukas Engel - can we get an update?

Played the first three games this season..

Carrick said of the Dane: “Lukas had a problem with his wrist - he fractured it, actually. But there’s no problem there. He’ll be alright.”

Then..

But explaining how Engel's issue had been ongoing for much of the season, Carrick said: "He’s had a bit of a pelvic issue on and off for a little bit throughout pre-season. So we are just seeing what the issue is, if there is one, and we’ll get him back pretty soon."

He’s been out for TWELVE games! I’ve seen him in and around the stadium so.. he’s still in and around the group.

I thought he was really good for the most part of last season.. thrown into the deep end at the start which fans have never really forgiven him for. He had more assists in the first half of last season than Ryan Giles had in his last 2nd half of the season with us. He got a few MOTM performances and was in a few team of the weeks.

35 appearances 2475 minutes 2 goals, 4 assists.

Back end of the season he wasn’t in the squad.. looked like he was struggling a little bit in pre season.

Alex Bangura made 14 appearances with 582 minutes (including 2 goals) Luke Thomas made 12 appearances with 659 minutes.

Neto Borges.. 11 appearances 950 minutes.. 1 assist.. not in the squad for Luton.

What goes on?

I think Lucas Engel is much better than some fans give him credit for.. but it seems very much like his picked up a big injury.

Engel is out for weeks not months. There was an update at a recent press conference on the long term injured. It was the presser where he didn't mention Rav van den Berg's injury. The rumour was he was injured but it didn't get mentioned at all. So, which one would that be?

It was pre Coventry he said "Lukas a few weeks, hopefully not that far away but still a number of weeks,"
Then he said Alex Gilbert is back around the group now, so that is good, he said.
He had talked about Alex Bangura being positive around the training ground which is a good sign, he said, but he is a long way off, Tommy Smith was still long term and there were no new updates on Darragh Lenihan.

Darragh must be so frustrated as he looked to be poised to be coming back in summer but obviously must have had a big set back again.

a few weeks suggests.. two or three., a number of weeks suggests more than 4 but less than 8. Left_Peg’s hip flexor comment stacks up with that.

Alex Gilbert being back around the group suggests longer than that.

Alex Bangura being positive.. still misses out most of this season by the sounds of it.

Tommy Smith still being long term is a bit of a worry. Long term sounds like a huge amount of time.

Darragh Lenihan had a set back in pre season I think.. a reoccurrence of his initial injury.. which is why we brought in Edmunson.

Forss was back with the U21s.. then disappeared into the Hoppe zone.

RVDB sounds like a few months.

Soon gets a wee bit hairy dunnit

I continue to live in hope for engel turning into a good lb. If he has been playing through injury it is unfair to judge him. However, even in his first season with us he put in the odd stinker, I mean really bad performance.

His best was easily good enough, his worst was awful.

I don't understand why the club are always so secretive with injuries as all it does is create a vacuum in which rumours grow and develop.

Surely giving fans fuller details won't play into the hands of opposing teams in any way (as these players aren't fit to play). Neither would it be detrimental to any future sale (as any ongoing injuries would surely be picked up in a medical?).

I mean.. Carrick has said a few times that he is injured. I doubt it’s a black and white thing in terms of the recovery time.

6 weeks to a year is pretty vague.

Lenihan was supposed to be back the start of the season but had another setback.

Always said this about Engel, he doesn’t have a turn of pace to be a good fullback.

He can’t be having confidence issues to survive in this league.

If he’s not good enough in the championship, he’s not good enough.

It's the usual very vague injury update from Carrick. He will say someone is 'in and around the group' or on the bench and they are not fit.

Engel hasn't played since having a few nightmares. So many think he's maybe been taken out of the firing line. The lack of info may suggest mentally. That's fine if it is that. Give him time and space. Also more so privacy.

The left back position is becoming a real issue. I'm not sure Neto is much better. Although early days. I actually thought Ayling did well against Luton.

It's not an easy fix. I mean even Scott said it's been a real issue to identify and sign a decent LB. Arguably harder to sign than a CF etc according to him.

I like the way Engel gets forward and takes the game to the opposition, he's better than Borges in that way. He gets turned easily by a good right winger..But then again, none of the left backs we have had for a while (possibly since Friend) have seemed to be up to much defensively. Good job none of them have to play against Doak!

Got to doubt Smith will ever run out for the first team again, what ever injury he has it's been a long time. Once he's in a position to train again it will take weeks if not months and he has to hope Dijiksteel, Ayling or Rav aren't sat on the bench hoping to get a game.

I thought Bangura was out for the season for some reason, so would be a bonus to get him back in the next month or two.

I think he could be brilliant in this team
