Liverpool are "exploring the range of options available"

I still think people are missing the bigger point, this isn’t about a wrong decision.

The Video Assistant Referee gave the right decision but wasn’t watching the game he was officiating on, so what was he doing??? Firstly what was he doing just during the build up to the Liverpool goal, as it is being claimed he thought a goal had been given, and then what was he doing after the game had restarted as it apparently took him 7 seconds to realise his mistake. Once the PGMOL answer those two things will become clearer.

I’m not saying anything sinister has deliberately taken place but Darren England was being paid to officiate in the game and for at least 1 minute of this he wasn’t (if the accounts of what happened are to be believed)

That’s not what happened

It’s incorrect though.

He wanted to inform the ref of the mistake before the freekick was taken but wasn’t allowed by the VAR bigwigs

That was a very quick invention by the VAR bigwigs and one that would need to be fully investigated if true, as that would make the timeline of what happened very odd

1) Liverpool score and goal disallowed for offside
2) Darren England checks for offside and (as he thinks a goal has been given) indicates check complete (which we know he meant Jota was onside)
3) Before Spurs restart the game the error is identified
4) A VAR "bigwig" contacts Stockley Park and tells Darren England the error cannot be rectified and the game must restart with a free kick to Spurs for the original offside decision.
5) VAR bigwig collects his winnings for his Son First Goal Scorer bet (although I must admit this is pure speculation on my part)

I think I prefer the "Darren England was watching the Ryder Cup" explanation

Not watching a game of football when you’re being paid to do so is human error, incompetence is probably a description than human error I’d say
dereliction of duty, probably the best description.....IF, IF that's what happened. It could be a rumour.

If that's what happened then the process can be improved, lockers at the entrance to the VAR studio, all officials place their electronic devices in that locker prior to the start of the match.

They shouldn't have access to TV channels, social media or anything else that could distract or prejudice them.

Definitely agree with all that.

Although I love the idea that at the moment the VAR team can be watching other TV channels whilst being the Video Assistant Ref

In true Alan Brazil style "c'mon give us your programmes to watch whilst on VAR duty."

In Darren Englands case surely he was watching an episode of A Place in the Sun as a couple were looking to relocate to the Middle East.

Not sure it’s been mentioned but someone mentioned it on talk sport that they may have been watching the Ryder cup at the time.

If this is correct then it’s a shocking revelation and shows where there priorities are.

I honestly can’t believe that’s the case but it has been suggested.
Talksport is like the gbnews of sport

I’m not being defensive I’m just stating the fact that they haven’t got a written right in the rule books to make such a request.

Liverpool have gone outside the rule book, gone rogue, it’s an ad-hoc request, there’s no precedent for it, there is no agreed mechanism where PGMOL take requests from clubs, and that’s why it’ll likely be turned down.
I think you're a great poster fella and we share a lot of common values. But on occasion you really need to reign in that superiority complex you adopt which can be quite belittling of other posters.

Who are these 'bigwigs' in the room then?

That explanation sounds like a.load if cobblers. If it is true though then it would certainly bring down the PGMOL.
I was about to ask the same.....in the past it might have been Paul Daniels or Terry Wogan, but now hair transplants are all the rage the old syrup is sadly neglected. Maybe it's Howard Webb's chosen disguise?!

Nah, refine it, bring in a bit of AI to speed up the tech. Maybe look at a Tennis style manager appeal system and offside and pen decisions as mandatory.

If they got rid of VAR, managers and fans would just complain at the increase in bad decisions.
Tennis doesn’t really have an appeal system any more in the slams as it was mainly used for line calls but Hawkeye is now fast enough to work in real time and tell the umpire who makes the call directly, dispensing with line judges altogether* and leaving very little left to appeal. It’s still there in theory for calls the umpire makes by eye like double hits, ball not up etc, but largely obsolete.

This is the way ahead for VAR for me. Use it for line decisions that can be automated and work in real time (already for goal line tech, pretty much there for offside and other out of play calls) but be much more circumspect where it’s just one opinion for another.

* - except at Wimbledon where they still use line judges because they’re even bigger luddites than the average football fan.
