Leaked England Team

Well if that is the team, Southgate will have no hiding place if we lose. Deschamps did the exact same thing in matching up the mighty Swiss yesterday and it didn't work. Guardiola tried something new and unusual in the CL Final and it didn't work, whereas Tuchel stuck with the tried and tested and took home the European Cup.

To me it makes no sense to play 5 games in a month with a back 4, keep 5 clean sheets and then move to a back 5 at the first sign of trouble. It smacks of cowardice and basically means we need to be better than the Germans at their own game. I'd much rather we had let their wing backs worry about our pace out wide and get them on the back foot.

At the end of the day, Southgate will live and die by his choices and I truly hope this selection, if true, works for him.

The thing is, if he goes with four at the back and we lose, he will get criticised for not being able to adapt. If we go five at the back and lose, he will get criticised for changing of formula that got us to the group.

France changing their formation last night certainly didn’t work for them in the first half, they played like they didn’t know each other. It was only when they reverted back that they look any good.

that said, We have played with both formations over the past few years, so it should be alien to
the players.

I think it shows Southgate and the coaches are thinking about the opposition and which players and formation is best suited. England have played 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 so far. It's not unexpected that 3-4-3 will be used against Germany. The main concern is Phillips and Rice will lose out to Kroos and Gundegan as both are better players and offer more attacking threat too.

If we are playing 3 CB's then we do not need two holding midfielders, it's plays to our weakness not our strengths and smacks of long ball into the corners.

Can’t bear another backwards - sideways passing Karankesque display with Rice at the helm. That team is so cautious - Saka aside there is no flair or creativeness just a dour keep what we have mentality to grab a 1-0 at best. Really hope that team is wrong and Gareth has grown a pair and puts a show on for the country with the likes of Grealish. Foden Mount involved. Get into them Gareth and run the ragged with this 11

………………..Pickford ………………..
Trippier……. Stones…. Maguire…. Chilwell
………………. Henderson ………………….
Saka……………………………….Mount…
…………………Grealish………….,,,,,,,….,..
……. ……Foden…………,,,,,,…………,,,,,,,,,

This is the England team according to some reports

Pickford

Trippier
Walker
Stones
Maguire
Shaw

Rice
Phillips

Sterling
Kane
Saka
Great.

So we are playing for penalties then?

Only two out and out attacking players.

Disappointed if this is going to be the team. Despite some still believing we did well playing with this system at the last World cup, the reality is we lost to the two decent teams we played.

I worry that we'll be playing right into the Germans' hands by allowing them to have the ball and play on the counter; it's exactly what happened against Croatia in the semis.

I understand that Southgate is probably hoping we can nullify their threat with this system but in a way we're potentially nullifying our own threat.

Still, hopefully it works and I will love it if I'm proven wrong.

There are two changes to the Germany side who scraped past Hungary in dramatic fashion.

Ilkay Gundogan and Leroy Sane drop out, alongside Serge Gnabry.

Thomas Muller, Leon Goretzka and Timo Werner come into the side.

Germany XI: Neuer, Rudiger, Ginter, Hummels, Kimmich, Havertz, Kroos, Werner, Goretzka, Gosens, Muller.

That team is fine, providing we can keep it 0-0 till halftime and then bring the subs on, albeit the chance of this isn't high imo.

The problem is, that team is unlikely (not saying it won't, I'm saying unlikely) to be able to get ahead and stay ahead, and if we end up chasing, then we're knackered.

Looks a bit handicapped to me.

We're one of few teams who have plenty of attacking talent, as their strength, yet we play a way suited to our weaknesess.

It would be like boro playing attacking a few years back, when we had a strong defence, but zero creativity, it's the wrong way around. It was like France yesterday, for the first half, they played a way that did not suit their squad structure and as soon as they changed it they battered the Swiss. The only reason they conceded (and ultimately lost) is they got extremely arrogant and complacent.

Don't play defensive when you need two holding mids (neither who are our top 5 players), and have a back three which is error-prone. Especially against a team that is slow at the back, and error-prone themselves.

I think we should be trying to attack teams, forcing them to be defensive, seems a bit of an easy way out doing it the opposite way to this.

The only saving grace is that Germany are not great, and probably a weaker side than us, so we may still scrape it. We also have home advantage.

A loss isn't an option here.

If we do manage to keep it tight, then bringing on Foden and Grealish, among others could work out really well second half, but we don't want to be doing that from a losing position, as Germany will just sit back and absorb everything we have.
Mate I agree with every word of that.

It’s funny, and I actually don’t mind the team that much, but you’re dead right - playing 8 defensive minded players when you’ve got so much attacking talent is a bit of reverse problem solving, and is probably the biggest example of Gareth’s natural conservatism that we were all a bit worried about.

Disgraceful whoever leaked that with Germany having had all day to counter the tactics/personnel

Here we go again with the negativity.

You can't fault going the same formation as the Germans. If you do that it's a fight between Sterling, Saka, and Grealish for the wide forward positions. He's gone for pace against a very slow German defence. You can't really drop Sterling after 2 goals in 4 games.

Mount would be a struggle to play with a 4 across the middle, he is better in a 3 man CM.

I'm fine with it, we will hit them on the break, using the pace of Sterling and Saka, sitting back will reduce space for their faster forward players to work with.

I'm confident

Yeah, I don’t mind too much.

Saka was excellent in the last game plus it’s not like we can’t use subs.

Of course there are names on the bench that we all would like to see play but you can’t have everyone on.

it might be a game where the subs are just as important as the starting 11, and at least nobody can say we haven’t got any talent on the bench.

It seems overly reactive to me and leaves what many would consider our best players on the bench. I can understand his thoughts behind it, but it is super defensive when we haven't been much of an attacking force anyway.

But getting pace around Hummels is obviously a good idea, and Kane is due a goal.

Fingers crossed it pays off, but if Germany get an early goal we're not in a great shape to get after them IMHO, plenty of subs these days of course.

I'm getting jittery but hopeful!
