Leaked England Team

Have you thought that Southgate may just be lucky in that he probably has the best overall players available to an England manager since Alf Ramsey?

He can pick the wrong team and get away with it because Jack can come on and turn the game in 15 minutes.

But apart from Grealish, strikers like Stirling and Kane only need a half opening, Maguire and Stones are giants in defence and Pickford has been excellent.

I’m not disappointed Southgate is winning, I’m delighted, but I suspect he is getting away with some poor selection and tactics because of the sheer depth of talent in the squad.
Aye. That’s it he’s lucky, you’ve nailed it!

Southgate was involved in revolutionising grassroots football a decade ago. Part of the reason he has better technical players to choose from is because of that grassroots development that he was heavily involved in.

He also helped develop many of these England players when he was U21 manager

If he has influenced the production of some of these players then all credit to him but the fact remains that until Jack came on today that game was in the balance, it could very well have gone the other way.

As a fan, I think he needs to be less cautious to be a truly great England manager, I hope he has it in him, I really do.

So if he wins the Euros he wouldn’t be a great England manager? As we are only 3 games away from history incase you weren’t aware pal

Absolutely delighted. Why wouldn’t I be happy? How can I not be happy tonight?
I know it was a great result, despite my posts I’m very happy as well, and I like Southgate, he’s a Boro legend, maybe because of that I want him to win in style,

It didn't though, Germany barely created anything, the only time they got behind us was when Sterling misplaced a pass. We wore them down, and were worthy winners in the end.

It was always likely that Grealish would come on, we wanted to tire their defenders out first. Southgate confirmed it afterwards.

we've lost in style too many times for me to care about that. I want us to win. If we do that, maybe next world cup we can try and win and with style

Well I don’t understand the post then. Phillips in particular was quality tonight and he is going to play them 2 for the rest of the tournament I would imagine as they have proved him right. They were up against Kroos and Goretzka tonight in the middle and did their job splendidly. Southgate produced a brilliant team performance. I really don’t know what some people expect

This is a great opportunity, let’s hope his caution in the midfield doesn’t hold him back.

I know you think I’m being miserable but he annoyed me with that team selection today.

See this is what I don’t understand. Fair enough he annoyed you with the selection all fans get annoyed with team selections at times, none more so than me when it comes to the Boro. But on reflection, he was spot on as we won 2-0. And his star substitute made the difference. I don’t get how you can still be annoyed after the game. It makes no sense, if anything you should just be delighted and start to trust the manager more than you do.

I think I maybe have a different expectation from international football teams and matches than wars of attrition and then bringing the best most creative players on to sneak the win, sometimes that will work sometimes it won’t. Football is sterile enough these days without encouraging that approach at the highest level.

The likes of Maradonna, Zidane, Cruyff and co weren‘t relegated to super sub status whilst the water carriers drowned the opposition.

Germany had two excellent attempts saved by Pickford, apart from the Sterling mistake miss, if one of those had gone in it’s a different game.

the game has always been about trying to stifle the best players, Maradona's Argentina were famous for aggressive tactics against their opposing best players. The game is more tactical these days though, particularly at the top level. You might prefer blood and thunder lower league, that's cool and has it's place, but international hasn't been like that for a very long time.

Yes and it is to its detriment, although in this tournament there were two excellent blood and thunder matches last night involving top international teams like France, Spain and Croatia.

Didn’t the Real Madrid president say that youngsters are no longer interested in the game?

There is a reason for that.

They were not the norm, for international football and yes they were fantastic entertainment, but some of the quality was poor, defensively there were some really, really poor mistakes.

Kids have many more distractions these days. Playstation, youtube, social media, netflix etc. It's not because football is more tactical. Crowds prior to covid were holding up pretty well weren't they?
