It’s Cattermole

No not Southgate.. the Summer of 2008 was our downfall..
Summer deals for Charles Itandje & Gretar Steinsson fell through resulting in Brad Jones, Ross Turnbull & Justin Hoyte taking centre stage.

the banks pulled the plug in January 2009 and we missed out on Ben Watson and Nemenjac Matic

Southgate’s team was mint!! He wanted Alex Witsel, Steffen Defour & Gareth Bale (amongst others) The plan was to sell Stewart Downing to Spurs to pay for all this but the banks wouldn’t allow the transfer money to be spent on players.
In an ideal world it would have been brilliant if we could have signed those players but they were the constraints he was working under.

We know Alves was probably signed as a gift from the Chairman but I'm sure some of those signings will have been Southgate's, and was the decision to sell Boateng, Cattermole and Rochemback and replace them with Digard Southgates, or the clubs'?

Why did Middlesbrough get relegated? Poor recruitment. Mido was a carcrash and Alves couldn't come up with the goods. (pretty much)

Mido £6m
Steven Fletcher was recommended to Boro for £1m by Mark Proctor summer 2007 we turned our noses up and went instead for Mido

Alves £12m (which was more like £3.5m ) January 2008
Ross McCormack was recommended to Boro for £300k by Mark Proctor

Letting James Morrison go for £1.5m and bringing in Jérémie Aliadière was a bit of a whoopsie imo.. although seeing Aliadiere and Tuncay up top for us was probably some of the best football I saw us play that season.

Downing was promised we would bring in a certain quality of player in the summer (Defour, Wiesel etc) and it didn't happen.

Summer 2008

Mark Schwarzer for Charles Itandje - messed up the transfer (boro wanted him on loan) we stuck with Turnbull and Jones
Luke Young for Gretar Steinsson - baulked at the £4m transfer so spent £3.5m on Justin Hoyte
Lee Cattermole for Graham Dorrans - turned our noses up (Mark Proctor recommendation £100k) went for Didier Digard £4m
Fabio Rochenback for - Charlie Adam turned our noses up (Mark Proctor recommendation £500k) went for Marvin Emnes £3.2m

Would Dorrans and Adam have been up to the job.. would our players at the time

January 2009 We were preparing a £2.5m offer for Steven Fletcher based on the money we were due on the sale of Stewart Downing to Spurs £7m which the bank wouldn't let us spend on players including: Ben Watson £2m & Nemanja Matić £1m Charlie Adam £500k Charles Itandje £1m

We hadn't really replaced George Boateng and lacked that extra bit of steel of grit that the likes of James Morrison, Gretar Steinsson, Graham Dorrans, Charlie Adam would have brought to the team.

I agree with Downing that the players brought in were not Gareth Southgate's players.

Does this side get relegated 2009 in the premier league? That back four is ROCK HARD!

To be fair, I think that team would have struggled. Doubt we'd have had much in the way of creativity with Arca and O'Neill in the midfield, and not many goals with Aliadiere and Tuncay up front.

Didn’t went only get relegated on 3 points? Even a central jdfielder in January could have made the difference! Still.. for all of those complaining that our club has been declining over the past 15 years.. take a look at the table from that year we went down. Here are the more successful clubs that stayed up that season:

11Wigan Athletic38129173445−1145
12Stoke City38129173855−1745
13Bolton Wanderers38118194153−1241
14Portsmouth381011173857−1941
15Blackburn Rovers381011174060−2041
16Sunderland3899203454−2036
17Hull City38811193964−2535

If it happens it’s time for me to find another sport to occupy my weekends, we would 100% be heading down and I think I’d genuinely be done with football. I wouldn’t even check the results.

An absolute scandalous reckless gamble if true. It's not too farfetched to say it puts the club's existence in jeopardy. We appointment cattermole there's a reasonable chance we go down to div 1. We go down to div1 who's to say we get stuck there it took Sunderland seasons to get out. The club is a not a sustainable entity at that level. It's absolute madness to take such a punt.

It’s a bit premature to be say we would definitely go down.

Cattermole May turn out to be a good manager. It’s a really massive risk though. We can’t afford another woodgate.

We can’t assume that it would be the case though.

But ultimately cattermole has been wrote off before he’s managed a game for the club in the same fashion woodgate was never given a chance by the majority of our fans

If anything our fan base is really entitled bunch who get above our station

The fans were right about woodgate he was useless. We may stay up, we may not it's a reckless gamble though because he has no track record at this level he's completely unproven. How does cattermole come top of any candidate list.

In don’t know how he does, I haven’t seen him work and i haven’t heard him speak about the game. But just because we haven’t heard him doesn’t mean he won’t be good. He should be given a chance before being wrote off

Woodgate said he was effected by the things that were said social media, so I’m sure that stopped him working to the best of this ability. We won’t see fans take responsibility for that though. The hate before he’d even taken a training session was unfounded. No doubt that would effect anyone and apply even more pressure to them

Same is going to happen with cattermole. If cattermole is offered the job why wouldn’t he take it.

I don’t agree with it, but as @newyddion said. If the likes of Parker, lampard etc can step into management why can’t cattermole?

I don’t think we need to go this route, I don’t think it’s ever worked promoting internally, but I’ll give cattermole every opportunity to prove himself and I won’t be on here if he losses his first game having blind panic slagging the club off

It's been an amazing ride Steve but please the time has now come to depart with a lifetime worth of goodwill in the bank #announcecashrichbillionaire

Gibson won't be put off by Cattermole's age. He was not much older when he became Boro chairman and signed Bryan Robson. And he was even younger than Cattermole during the consortium takeover in 86.

But I wonder how Keiran Scott sees it, if true.

I really am starting to fear a nightmare team of Cattermole, Percovich and whoever else is cheap, local and pliable.

Desperate.
