It’s Cattermole

Ah right, I remember Bryan Robson being introduced as new Boro manager, I must have forgotten about the multi millions of pounds he was promised to spend on new players.
What is the next managers budget?

You forgot the millions of pounds he spent on players? Weird.

This would make even less sense than the Woodgate appointment. At least Woodgate had some experience working as an assistant coach, under Agnew and Pulis.
I would argue that Cattermole had more experience playing in the premier league, more as being a captain and definitely more fighting relegation. Lee with 302 apps vs Jono with 244 apps.. he’s into it sooner and had a more consistent level of experience.

as indicated in my post. Gibsons obsession at appointing ex Boro players as his manager.
Obsession? Southgate was an outstanding captain and a big part of our success in Europe, we needed to cut costs rapidly and GS did an exceptional job in the circumstances.. he went on to be one of our most successful England managers. Mowbray took a £700k hit to join us and save the club from relegation and financial ruin.. he put his reputation on the line and built the core of a promotion winning squad. Woodgate moved from Liverpool’s set up to assist Steve Agnew, he worked with the academy and went on to assist Tony Pulis. When he took the job we were once again in financial difficulty, he kept the costs down and developed the likes of Spence who he had worked with in the academy into a player we ended up selling for £12m - success can looks very different in the circumstance. That season more experienced managers with access to more resources did not rare as well as JW.. he went on to help Bournemouth our in difficult circumstances. Working to a very competent standard. What is the obsession from fans with thinking players/coaches from outside of our club are far superior to those we have?

Must be late or I’m too old but I don’t get your point.
My point was, nobody knew how much money Robbo was promised before he was given the job, although I understand Lee Cattermole will be given nowhere near the amount Robbo was.

Captaining a team and managing a team are two very different things though. I remember Shearer saying that he struggled with the fact that he had to make every little decision when he was managing Newcastle. He said you've got to be a Father figure almost to all of the players and it takes a certian type of person to be able to handle that.

Give over…

Gibson made a major mistake in appointing Southgate. We were at the pinnacle of Middlesbrough FC and we have never been the same since and are unlikely to ever go back to the days we had. We had just been to a major European final and could have kicked on, instead we went for the cheap option. Within 3 years we were gone.

Woodgate again should have been no where near the managers job. He was not cut out to be a manager and I think his poor record as a manager confirms this. I’d be surprised if he manages again. He had a 21% win percentage at Boro which is up there as one of the worst records as a Boro manager.

Mowbray laid the building blocks for Karanka’s success so I won’t fault him.

Bryan Robson came from a successful Man Utd.. he was tasked with bringing Middlesbrough up to that sort of level. Similar to Karanka who tried to implement the professionalism he experienced at Real Madrid to the club.

Lee Cattermole has captained a struggling club in turmoil fighting relegation on a regular basis. I think Lee Cattermole will be tasked with improving the squad and making best use of our available resources. Being able to buy into the project from the ground up may be more beneficial than an older more impatient coach who may want to cut corners with ex players and seasoned mercenaries cat the end of their careers.

Stick Grant Leadbitter into the mix and we start building something very interesting indeed..

Shearer was a very different sort of captain to Cattermole and played in very different circumstances

Appointing Southgate, going for the cheap option.. the season we went down the banks were after everything back!! If we hadn’t taken the cheap option we might have went under! Bigger managers have been relegated btw. Woodgate came about in similar circumstances.. a long term plan after the smash the league catastrophe of Monk and Pulis. We massively underperformed on our investment. We needed to cut costs and effectively tred water.

I believe Robbo and Karanka chose the the players they thought would improve their squad, now with a DOF it’s a completely different ball game.

Southgate did have to cut costs but those two seasons he kept us up we still had plenty of good experienced players who had remained at the club following McClaren's departure...........Schwarzer, Boateng, Rochemback, Downing, Viduka and Yakubu, and we added quality additions such as Young, Woodgate and Huth.

It was of course the third season, when Southgate had more or less assembled his own team that things went downhill.

Cattermole won't have the luxury of acquiring a strong squad, which Southgate had when he took over.

As for Woodgate, he did keep costs down but ultimately he would have taken the club down if Gibson hadn't have pulled the trigger.

No not Southgate.. the Summer of 2008 was our downfall..
Summer deals for Charles Itandje & Gretar Steinsson fell through resulting in Brad Jones, Ross Turnbull & Justin Hoyte taking centre stage.

the banks pulled the plug in January 2009 and we missed out on Ben Watson and Nemenjac Matic

Southgate’s team was mint!! He wanted Alex Witsel, Steffen Defour & Gareth Bale (amongst others) The plan was to sell Stewart Downing to Spurs to pay for all this but the banks wouldn’t allow the transfer money to be spent on players.
