Giro D’Italia Chat (Contains spoilers) 🇮🇹

Bit jinxed so far this Giro. Successive days unnecessary avoidable incidents ko riders. Right at the finish this happened with the helicopter.

It's just pitiful really. He'd be better off just telling the truth. British cycling had taken a wayward turn in pursuit of success.
’Pitiful‘ is such a good word for this.
Just begs the question why he would put himself through this. I really fear for his heath.

I know Shane Sutton is no angel, but that sounds like a very convenient mix of circumstances to be bullied into breaking medical practice. It's no wonder that cycling can't, and probably never will, shake off its negative image when you read about such stuff.
It's a shame for all those who are genuine and who are tainted by that overriding negative perception.
Back to the feed zone issues, they've just had one in a town and the number of discarded bottles being thrown into high walls and hedges and bouncing back towards the riders was asking for trouble. Yet a minute or so later they are riding through an area where that wouldn't happen.

Bit on the heavy side? Apparently he's the biggest guy in the whole field - not sure if that means he is also he heaviest.

He’s a big talent. He’s dominated the Track Individual Pursuit over the past 4 years. Massive engine. Still think he’s a puncheur and rolleur and not a specialist climber who can challenge for a GT. As PQ says. Bit too heavy.

Today was amazing. If he can take time in ITTs and defend in mountains, he has a wiggo-ish chance of winning a GT down the line. It's hard to imagine him climbing with the best .... but it has happened before. He did look a bit like Indurain.

Just spotted this in the CN report.
Ganna's weight and height – "82 or 83kg and 1.92m" he confirmed – hardly made him the favourite to drop his fellow escapees on the 25km haul up the Valico Monte Scuro, but he chose his moment sagely, hanging tough on the steepest section and then punching clear as the gradient eased in the final 4km of the climb.

So he's exactly the same weight as me today, and I'm 2 stones heavier than when I was my fittest - but I was 1.80m then - so he's one big lad.
I saw Wiggins come up from his 'amateur' days and would never have dreamt of him winning any GT let alone the TdeF. But that was before modern dieting and training regimes, so anything is possible I suppose.

Will be very interesting to see how he goes in the high mountains, or if he saves himself for the TTs and possibly even some of the “flat” days.

Yates make a tactical mistake today? Hanging around the back of the group is often risky.

I think Yates was lucky today. I'm not sure if he was hanging on or hanging back, but he was distanced over the top and given the rain and mist on the descent and the fact that Nibali was on the front of the peloton I think Yates must have taken a few risks to stay in contact.

I hope Yates comes good in week three. He has clearly been struggling with something (maybe viral), but he did state his intention to ride conservatively in the first week. I suspect, also, that his excellent TT effort will have taken plenty out of him.

I find Yates’ behaviour odd. The commentators often refer to him as ‘being happy at the back’.
It is just a risk that isn’t worth taking

Or maybe he isn’t well and is happy to be towed for now? His form has dropped off dramatically since winning the Tirenno a few weeks back.

A third possibility is that having lost time he's lying low, bluffing if you like, in the hope he rides himself into form and can come on really strong in the third week. I'm not quite sure what I believe and only him and his team know the answer.

Deadly finish by the best form sprinter at the moment.

as and aside - Eurosport is annoying. Last two days I’ve taped the stage and come back to flick through the boring bits. On each occasion the recording has finished before the bleedin race. Yesterday 6km to go, today 3kn to go
Ended up catching the end on Steephill
