Euro knock out stages - England

If you win 1 group match, then it pretty much means you qualify for the KOs.
I think it'll be goal difference that will cost someone. I don't see which groups will have 2 teams without a win.

Most groups have at least 1 very weak side that could lose all 3, meaning 3 teams on at least 3 points, particularly group B, C and E who will all have three teams through, that means 2 out of A, D and F will fail to qualify:

weak teams:
A - Turkey
B - Finland
C - North Macedonia
D - Scotland
E - Slovakia
F - Hungary

In group F, I think it will come down to the Germany vs Portugal game. A draw would see both probably through, a winner will see the other drop out with 3 points, unless they batter Hungary and they have only let in 6 goals in their last 10 competitive matches, so I don't see that.

I see Germany needing a 3-0 win against Hungary in their last game OR Portugal needing a win against France in their last game to go through.

Being brave putting Scotland on the weak list :)

That's a lot of analysis and ifs and buts BoroMart.

The group stages are almost always cagey events, particularly in teams opening games where they are desperate not to loose. Most teams want to just get out of the group and don't really care how they get out.

I would expect Scotland to drop out at the group stage, but they may do some damage to England on the way. The players may be playing the occasion against Scotland rather than the game.

I really don't know what to expect other than 1 or 2 teams will surprise during the tournament and 1 or 2 will fail miserably. Let's hope the home nations fall into the teams that surprise.

I would love to see Scotland progress, as a scot, but I don't think that will happen, unfortunately.

I can see Scotland beating the Czech Republic at Hampden, that means they could arrive at Wembley with 3 points and it could also be England only have 1 after a cagey draw with Croatia. Now that would make for a fascinating game and build up!!!

absolutely, the reality is that there is a 1 in 3 chance of being KOd in 3rc place and we will know a lot more after the first game., but it isn't a gimme that those 3 will qualify just because they are three quality sides.

That would indeed make for an interesting game. I am starting to get fairly excited for the whole thing now.

Czech Republic aren't pushovers, they have a decent team with some PL stars of the last season (Soucek and Coufal) and they beat us in 2019.

This is true. But it let's not get ahead of ourselves about this Scotland team, that have some serious limitations and the Czechs are no mugs.

It seems that everyone is looking at things logically re: the quality of France, Germany, Portugal and how difficult they would be to face etc, but not England. We have a lot of good players and should win every grouo game.

What happens if we finish 3rd in group and qualify?

Gareth Southgate will decide to stay off the internet and not look at a newspaper for a few days.

I think because only 4 out of 6 third place teams qualify, we wouldn't know until the group was completed who we'd play. That's what I'm guessing anyway!

According to some of the writing I've seen Turkey have their best side since the 2002 World Cup.

Who are Engerlund?
Why did you leave Hungary out of it in your post?

Also if England finish top and we’ll be playing at Wembley not Hampden Park Glasgow. Just saying.
Hungary, whilst a crack Eastern European outfit, are a lesser team than the other three previously mentioned. I think Engerlund could dismantle them with ease.
You are quite correct, the winners of Engerlunds group will indeed play the 2nd round match at Wemberlee. Happy to clear that up.

it’s the winner of that game that travel to Rome, Italy

Glad we've clarified where Rome is!😅

I didn't realise until last night that you can qualify finishing 3rd. Only 8 teams get knocked out in the group stages.

Talksport were saying you could go through with 3 points and definitely with 4. It's harder not to go through 😂
Scotland will find a way. Oh and I support Scotland too :sneaky:

I think we'll beat Croatia comfortably. I see an aging squad. Couple of good player for sure, but they should be much more worried about us. I can't see Kane having too many nightmare's about being marked by Lovren. 2-0.

Scotland would be the banana-skin. I'd take a scrappy 1-0 with no injuries and no suspensions.

Czech Rep don't fill me with dread at all. They were awful at Wembley a year or two ago. One or two decent players. We should be beating them 3-0 for me.

So there you have it. 9 points, goals for 6, against 0...onto the German's in the second round to get knocked out.
