CURRENT SQUAD V KARANKA PROMOTION SQUAD

The current squad in my honest opinion is still very raw. Ok the talent is there but as we found out last weekend the know-how when we’re missing Howson and McGree probably isn’t. The Karanka squad had a great mix of experience, flair and grind it out talent with Clayton and Ayala being the two who were just great in the trenches.

Dimi
Nsue& Friend
Gibson & Ayala
Leadbitter & Clayton
Downing & Adomah
Stuani & Nugent

vs

Dieng
Ayling & Engel
RVDB & Clarke
Morris & Hackney
McGree & Burgzorg
Forss & Latte Lath

trying to get anywhere near a comparison.. that's as close as I can get. Obviously there are the new guys in there that have just joined the squad who have a lot of heavy lifting to do.. but the biggest thing is the number of games that the promotion side racked up.. each and every one of them racked up 40+ games that season.. straight away we have players missing and question marks over a few more. who out of our current squad is capable of turning in 40+ games a season?

I honestly don't think any of them can.. I don't think i'm being harsh there.. it's a big ask!

The good news is..

-------------------Mejías----------------
Kalas--De Laet--Amorebieta--De Pena
-----------Forshaw--Zuculini-----------
---------Reach--Ramirez--Fabbrini-----
---------------------Kike-----------------
vs
-----------------Glover----------------
Dijksteel--Fry--Lenihan--McCormick
--------Howson--Barlaser------------
------Azaz--Gilbert--Hamilton-------
---------------Conway----------------

I think our 2nd string is stronger. and I think we have plenty in there who can manager 30+ games

they're all through the door and we have a few more to come back.

Forss & McGree are a big worry.. Conway & Azaz can do a good job

I would say the straightforward difference is -
Karanka's squad was ready and conditioned for the promotion push because it was an experienced squad. That squad arguably reached it's ceiling in its promotion...... That isn't a criticism but most of that squad were very good championship players .... Nothing wrong with that.

In contrast Carrick's squad appears to be conditioned over the last 12 months for this season. It's a much younger squad..... The ceiling for most players is not really known...... They are not as experienced but the potential should be greater than Karanka's squad.....

Fingers crossed!!!!!

The obvious other difference is the style of the coaches..... Can't be bothered analysing that at this time!

If I was going to pick a team in our current system from a combined squad it would be:

----------Dieng-------------

Nsue-Gibson-Ayala-Friend

--Leadbitter-Hackney-----

Adomah-Ramirez-Downing

----------Lath--------------

I think Morris could potentially play himself into this team.
The backline is tough to pick. Not much between Ayala and Clarke or Nsue and Ayling. But the AK boys slightly edge it for me.

Still yet to see Clarke perform over the course of the season. Gibson was extremely consistent all season, so i can understand why you'd choose Gibson over Clarke.
Gibson was excellent for us.
So good he actually got an England call up although didn't actually get on if I remember rightly? Burnley paying £15m for him is a good indicator of just how good he was for us.

His career clearly took a drastic downwards spiral from then on but those 3 seasons he played regularly for us, he was excellent.

Its close with the contrast of the two and that's with Ramirez and Rhodes in 2015/16 side and they only played from the end of January.

Newy - I can't see Lenihan in your list.

We're looking ok
I particularly like the way Baptiste of 15/16 is to be compared against Tommy Smith this season. The debate over who can lie on a treatment table more effectively will rumble on for an age.

He should be next to Woodgate.. really.
Tough call innit
