Let's analyse this as though Micah Hamilton, Tommy Conway and Ryan Giles are all part of this year's squad.
Dieng over Dimi
Rav over Ayala
Gibbo over Clarke
Ayling over Nsue
George over Giles
Hackney over Clayton
Grant over Howson
Stuani over Isiah
Hamilton over Albert
Gaston over Riley
Latte Lath over Nugent
Stronger depth this season maybe
Thoughts ?

I’d take Jones over Stuani, I know Stuani went on to score a stupid amount of goals in Spain but he was never that good for us on the right.
Brighton and Sunderland goals probably clouded my judgement on that one, isiah excellent on his day though

So we're doing this thread again?

I'd compare Ramirez to Azaz. Ramirez was a better player for us but I think there's more to come from Azaz.

It's difficult because the tactics and system are very different.

The Karanka side also had some partnerships that were more than the sum of their parts.

If you were picking a side to play the Karanka way, I'd go Clayton/Leadbitter and Ayala/Gibson all day long.

Not necessarily better players than some of our current players, but that spine was rock solid.

You probably wouldn't want Ayala and Gibson to be trying to play through a high press though (definitely not Ayala).

A good question is which players would get in both sides despite the tactics.

I think Friend, Dieng, Latte Lath and Ramirez are the only certainties.

Cases to be made for a few others, but don't think it's clear cut.

I suspect Downing would've been exceptional under Carrick, but that's by the by.

I would never read a book twice but don't mind revisiting an old thread.

Stuani (not as a winger) and Gaston (the version with his head screwed on) would be the ones I would have in this squad. Albert was as good as Jones from what I remember.

Slightly related, it’s now nine years since our last promotion. I started going in 1976/77 and saw my first promotion in 86/87. We were outside the top flight from 81/82 to 87/88 which felt like a long time as did the period from 08/09 to 15/16. This doesn’t feel as long, probably an age thing, but is going to be my longest time without top flight football.

Is it pre season hopes and dreams that are making the squad seem better than they are?
Every year at this time I’m full of optimism (last season was probably the least in a while tho..)
Or will there be a early season blip and everyone saying we should’ve invested better… who knows…

I’m going with my optimistic heart any way … other wise what’s the point of being a football fan 🙂

I think we have had this thread before.

I would pick Dieng, Hackney, Latte Lath ahead of their equivalents in 2015/16.

Overall the 2015/15 team was a bit more effective.

The 2016 did finish second.

The big difference between the teams is if we took the lead with the 2015 team you knew we weren’t going to lose but this team likes to make you sweat 🤣
