Club Shop - Complete Shambles!

Diane sounds hot

As an aside, I've ordered one of my bairns a Boro duvet cover this year (wife not happy as doesn't really fit with her Pinterest inspired vision of their bedrooms). Nowhere to be seen yet and ordered over a week ago!
Imagine this happening now - back in 1992 our Mam bought me and duvet cover from the old club shop for my 9th birthday. As she was paying for it, she told the woman behind the counter it was a birthday present for me. I’m just going to say it was Diane, I’m almost certain that was her name. I think she’s on the Marching on Together video? Anyway she said ‘do you want me to get the players to sign it?’ and our Mam left it with her, with her phone number, and a few days later Diane rang her up and said it’s ready for you to collect.

Every single player, and Sir Lennie and John Pickering, had signed it. Literally all of them. It was absolutely superb. We were buzzing about that for years tbh. I don’t think you get that now. It’s a shame.

Surely they all washed off when she washed it ? Or did you not use it ?

I mentioned on here a short time ago I wanted a new scarf and bobble hat but nothing in stock. Still nothing in stock. The basic items of a club shop that should always be available. Shambles.
When I was in Plymouth i was jealous of the warm hats they were wearing and looked in their shop. They had 12 different types of hat to choose from and 9 different scarves. It can be done!

That's Plymouth as well, its about 4 degrees warmer!

This being brought up time and time again, it's a joke what is being sold ( or isn't ) in the club shop. Managed to get my son an away shirt a few months ago, he has asked for shorts and socks for it to make a full set for Xmas. No Stock!

Oh and the one chance we have to question the club on this at the supporters forum - they didn't ask the question because people had to leave.
There appears to be no trace of either away shirt on the club website, so no opportunity to order one. It’s bizarre with Christmas on the horizon. I can’t think of many businesses that operate like that. They’re catering to 40 or 50,000 people, they should have databases and a firm handle on numbers in terms of who buys what year-on-year. It’s weird that this just goes on and on tbh.

I can just about understand them running out of specific shirt sizes but not one-size stuff like scarves and bobblehats. it's like a firework shop with no stock in October and November.

(I’m now wondering why I wore my signed ICI Boro shirt so much, playing football with it in the rain and mud, at school, at Southlands. And often playing with a signed Boro ball, which was obviously absolutely destroyed within weeks. They’re heritage pieces, not toys. I’m more annoyed at our Mam for letting me tbh).

Their business model seems very much to be minimising stock so that there is nothing to go in the end of season sales. So if 150 tops, various sizes, sell out in August the targets have been met. Big whoops, high fives and bonuses all round.

2000 disappointed supporters armed with £50 to spend? Meh, not important.

Really is amateur hour. Appalling stock management and a shop full of cheap, sh*tty tat for a premium price.......which has also sold out. 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Just had a check on the webiste for shirt availability 3 weeks before Christmas.
Home shirt. Nothing smaller than XXL available.
Away shirt. L available nothing else available until 5XL
3rd shirt. Despite being "New In" the smallest they have is XL.

There are no kids home or away shirts.

This is not to mention how cheap the shirts look all for the price of £52.

I've said it before and i'll say it again, the clubs commercial department are holding the club back from growing the fan base and potential revenue streams.

The only supply issue with the kits is we don't order enough. Check out any other club with errea and see if they have any issues with kit supply.
My guess is that they are so stingy that they only pay for single bulk runs and they know they can sell a full run but they don't know if they would sell two full runs so they won't order them. It's utter incompetence because each shirt must have at least a 500% mark-up considering you can get a knock-off for £10 to your door from China and that must be profitable enough to do.

Volume x Margin = Profit. They only seem to care about Margin. It's like nobody has told them that selling more of something at a lower cost might be better than selling a small number for a large margin. They should be doing more frequent, smaller runs to flex for demand. They'll make less per shirt but they won't be making more overall. It's so basic that it is absolutely baffling.

It has to be one of the worst run retail shops I've ever encountered. The best example of how utterly useless they are is the delivery pricing. It gets more expensive the more you buy. Find anything in stock that costs less than £10 and you'll be charged £3 for delivery, anything over £10 is £6 (3-5 working days but could be up to 28! days) and there is no amount you can spend to get the delivery fee waived. That's just for the cheapest delivery option, it's £8 for Express delivery. International shipping is £13 to EU or £15 worldwide which is more than the total cost of buying a Chinese knock-off.

Sounds to me like they are also profiting off delivery fees which is pretty scummy. They say "For UK standard delivery we use a Royal Mail Tracked 48." which is less than £3 for a 2kg parcel.

I emailed the club shop as soon as I saw this thread and received this reply.
Please do read it carefully...

It’s Christmas and like most retailers we are up against it now, I’ve answered below the best I can, but the reality is the demand Rob, we have lots of new arrivals daily, but we realise we can’t satisfy everyone. We advise customers every day and keep them up to speed with Stock situation but

Home mini kits are Back in stock from 0-12 right through to 3 years.

Third shirts are full stocked in all children’s sizes, Adults we are missing S,M,L

Home & Away shirts have left Italy and are on the way as we speak, we tell people to go on to the website and select the email me when back in stock, this is a great tool to let people know the product is back in! they can then place the order online for click and collect ( free of charge) this saves people coming down or calling up and is the best way to secure stock.

Training wear has also left Italy and is on the way to us again, we tell people to use the online tool it’s the fastest way to communicate the stock is available.

Again, we do have lots of new stock, kids’ hoody’s, full tracksuits, coats, and nightwear etc:

I hope this is a help to people and as you can see there is a reason behind asking people to go to the website rather than have to return to the store again.
I am going to sit down with retail manager Jo-Ann Swinnerton after the Christmas rush with your questions.

The fastest way to communicate that stock is available is to order enough of it in the first place. The issue of running out of shirts within days happens every single season and has done for well over a decade. They seem to order them piecemeal. I presume it’s Errea’s fault.

I’ve asked this before but do other clubs whose kits are manufactured by Errea experience these shortages?

And is our refusal to sell outside of our own tiny club shop a factor in any of this? To my mind if you’re going to operate solely from your own little shop you ensure you have absolutely everything to hand. Otherwise you’re just flushing money away.

The only rush at this time of year should be the staff on the shop floor selling everything as quickly as possible. There should be no stock issues everything should have been in place months and months ago. Staff further up the chain should be enjoying mince pies and drinking mulled wine watching the tills fill up with money!!

Did she also add "and that table's lying 'an all"?

Everyone can calm down - we're all wrong, the club shop is doing a great job, we've had no stock shortages by shooting ourselves in the foot no sireee.
