Chris Wilder

Agreed. On another day we might have had 2 or 3
How many times can you keep saying that though before you realise either the players aren’t good enough or the manager is not instilling enough belief into players to have them confident in themselves and his tactics

I say the manager falls short

We went from the premier league to the brink of league 1 and completely skint in just over 3 seasons. We released 2 strikers we paid 25 million for on free transfers last season.
We have made a loss on the majority of our signings in recent years
Almost all of the managerial decisions have been wrong since we were relegated in 09

Yes Gibson has done so much good for this club but you can’t really say the day to day running of the club has been anything but a disaster in recent years

People don’t want to hear it though .

We’ve been ran poorly since Southgate was appointed really . Southgate wasn’t ready and it ultimately cost us our premier league status

- gave up effectively in the premier league season by hiring a non manager after karanka left. The transfers in January and managerial appointment suggested to me he was preparing for us to be relegated, despite actually having a fighting chance back then
- we’ve actually been below our historical average in terms of where we finish under Gibson these last 13 years
- sky high prices for a **** transfer policy from an incompetent ceo who he continues to employ
- hiring woodgate - as soon as he was appointed I knew Gibson had lost it

Aside from the two karanka years, we haven’t even looked close to getting promoted under gibsons leadership. People can keep calling for a change of manager all they want , the outcome for the club is still the same because the senior leadership that ultimately call the shots are still there

I have to agree

There is huge passion, commitment and willingness to inject large quantities of cash but it is quite some time since we have looked like a well run club.

Not out, but after now we finished last season and we’re starting this one I’m starting to ask questions.
Ask questions when he actually has all his players here - I’m afraid his hands are tied at the moment until they arrive. Would you like to set off on a fishing trip with half your tackle missing 😵‍💫

Pulis' first half season I thought we might. Bamford and Traore were sensational together. Didn't expect the daft old manager to break them up and get Gestede in for the all important playoff games.

And last season didn't look so unlikely until the last few weeks after the Burnley speculation/cup exit/Connelly entrance. There was a long period, maybe a couple of months when we were one of the top 2 or 3 form sides in the division.

I'd personally play 4-4-2. Giles and Jones wide, Bola LB, Dijksteel RB. Crooks and Howson in the middle.
I'd go 4-2-3-1 same as you but McGree behind the striker. At least until he gets the players he wants in. We don't have the players in to set up how he wants to set up. But we clearly have the players in to play that formation.

Apart from Giles who is an improvement, who else of his signings have done well? Steffen not sure yet! Lenihan not an improvement,,Mcgree wont be in the team if we get a proper striker and not strong enough to play LM, Mowatt tidy player but no pace, Hoppe & Forss ones for the future REALLY? Coburn & Boyd-Munce he quoted for the future, and he is wanting to send them both out on loan. He spoke after the Preston game last year about stellar signings/players that want to come here,so where are they?
Defence changes every week (no stability or confidence growing in the back 3)
Midfield too slow , good tidy players but all samey samey..(No real drive from our midfield)
Attack, I get the feeling he doesn't trust any of them , hopefully we get stability with new signings.
Wilder is blaming some players attitude/ability, but he needs to look at himself also, 6 players that were on the pitch yesterday were his signings..

Relationship with Fry is not good cause hes not playing thats natural for people to fall out, Fry isnt doing enough for the manager, so hes not in the team, the manager is testing his character, show me you can be better if he doesnt start then he hasnt done as the manager asked and if he leaves so be it!
Agree with this. Watching yesterday Fry seems to have an allergy to the half way line. He gets near it with rhe ball then turns back and passes sideways. I can see why Wilder prefers Lenihan as the first thing he does is look up for a forward pass or run into the space. Ok, sometimes that isn’t an option for lenihan and he passes sideways but he seems to want to get us on the front foot.

Exactly it's not his team guff is absolute nonsense or were we expecting to him to have a full new first 11 this season. Early days but we look worse than last season without tav

Completely agree, sadly some of our fans can’t seem to understand any of that. The club really has been run terribly over the last few years.

The table does not lie.
Kiss goodbye to the Auto Slots already.
Yet AGAIN the season's over before it starts with terrible decision making.
I guess we can hope for another decent cup run.

As i said, judge him when the squad is complete - if we’re still losing when all our signings are in place then we’ll all be asking questions. I think we’re all going to have to be patient till this month is out of the way then we will have a clear picture of the best side we can put out, till then it’s all up in the air. Yes ideally all our signings would have been in place before the season started but they aren’t, that isn’t Wilders fault, he has very little to do with the actual negotiations to sign players. The money is there for these players - I suggest we all keep our heads a little while longer because i still think this is going to be a very exciting season

If you look at his Sheff Utd side that got promoted while we messed about with play offs during last season of Pulis reign, it was an aggressive unit that was always up for the scrap, with football on the break. If they didn't win the match, they would leave everything out on the pitch.

He complained about a lack of bite during the last part of last season. I suppose his contention is you've got to win the fight first to earn the right to play the football and as we've found ourselves behind in 4 out of our 5 games maybe there isn't enough anger and desire to put a marker down when it counts on difficult away trips. And maybe you don't get that with the type of players who have underachieved/been sheltered from singled out criticism under Pulis, Woodgate and Warnock?

However I would say his job as manager and his coaching team is to find that extra level of performance, that extra edge in the players rather than throwing hands up and asking for more new players and bombing others out when we just don't have that luxury as a club.

Excellent post.

The CW style is, I think most would agree, exciting and ambitious, but like any team and system it isn't perfect all of the time.

I see Karanka mentioned on another thread, who's teams could be great to watch, but equally so defensive and unambitious it made you tear your hair out. Basically, whoever scored first won the game.

CW will get it right I'm sure, he's had a lot of success and comes with bags of experience, but his brand of football is based on taking risks and I'm all for that because I'd rather win 3-2 than 1-0 and see football on the front foot.

Thanks, we're all frustrated and signings have not looked like the finished article that will immediately kick us on, but all the posts questioning the ambition of the club, how its rotten to the core, how Wilder is about to walk, and he's lost the dressing room after a 1-0 defeat with the transfer window still open is just daft. The league table doesn't lie, we have to do better and every game without a win it becomes tougher, but to write the season off on Sunday 21st August is hysterical.

Conversely I seem to remember Leeds having big starts to the season and thinking they had it wrapped up by end of August, only to fizzle out in January.

That's the biggest surprise of the wilder era at Boro for me I was expecting us to physically compete and be right up for the fight like sheff utd but we are powder puff

I don't think you can change that mentality and physicality over two transfer windows but bringing in Lenihan is a start. I reckon if Morsy was still here he would be featuring, even though he is a limited footballer. We do have players who physically should be taking the fight to the other team like McNair, Crooks and Fry, and I suppose there was a hope that a big loud yank built like a boxer in Steffen would sort out our poor goalkeeping situation, but it hasn't clicked yet.
