🇨🇵France vs Germany 🇩🇪

I felt the germans were pretty poor to be honest, lacked creativity, moved the ball slowly in midfield and looked vulnerable to the counter-attack. It may just be that they were playing one of the best defensive and counter-attacking sides in the world, we will know more in a couple of days.
They had an okay spell in the second half, then bringing on Sane and Werner made them worse, both were surprisingly poor. Sane particularly looks distinctly average these days.

Agreed they were poor and killed the game. Yes the germans had a period of possession but moved it around too slowly, and couldn't get the right quality on any crosses or through balls.

Thought they looked lively for about 20 mins in the second half Pushed their wing backs further forward and created 1 or 2 chances.
the problem they have is that, yes they definitely looked more dangerous with the fullbacks right up......but they also looked terribly vulnerable to the counter attack and could easily have conceeded 3 more with better timed runs and Mbappe crossing for an open goal instead of shooting at near post.

I can see the Germans getting dumped in the second round at best.

France have a fantastic side full of absolute quality. England best hope to avoid them as they will beat England with ease.

In fact, Portugal will probably do likewise to England.

I think we are more likely to cause more problems for the French than the Germans did
Kyle Walker had Mbappe in his back pocket in the Champions League and as for Portugal, I could see Sterling causing Pepe some real issues
We have some good players as well

I can appreciate French football like French rugby. They not only have talented players but play the game with great energy. Even things like the way they trap the ball to take it it in the direction they're going to run speeds their game with technique as much as pace.

Germany looked pretty good in spells. As soon as they got to the final third they were average and lacked a cutting edge.

France looked no great shakes either with misplaced passes, poorly timed runs and some poor decision making in the final third.

They will both get better but if I were an England fan I would have seen nothing to be worried about.

Despite backing two different teams myself, I think we witnessed the eventual tournament winners last night. I've yet to see a better side than them. They really can do everything, and very very well. Great athleticism, link up play was exceptional. Obviously Mbappe is a huge threat but I though Benzema linked up with him brilliantly. Germany clearly not the side of old but expect them to improve in the next couple of games - didn't take enough risks in the final third for me.

I thought Italy looked direct and effective against a defensive team. Need to see how they do against a more attacking team.

It's a good point about Walker against PSG actually. I still wouldn't be confident as the French look strong all over the pitch. There's probably no better centre back partnership in the tournament than theirs.

Germany will qualify as a best third place team and probably make a run to the Semi-Final from there! Typical of them really.

That's the thing that suprised me the most, usually the German passing is crisp and purposeful but it was that laboured and pedestrian it was like watching Strachan era Boro.

Definitely, the front three that started the game seemed unfamiliar with each other's patterns of play. I'd have Havertz playing more centrally I think. Surprisingly little dynamism from the midfield as well, they needed someone to push forward and support attacks (I think that's Kimmich's best role personally). Gundogan and Kroos were completely outrun by the French midfield three (although I imagine most teams will be!)

Thought France looked in control throughout. They looked like they were in first gear all game and if needed could have ramped it up.

Scary to see how efficient they were against a top side away from home.

Looking at their squad, form and everything, it's France's to lose IMO.

They can defend very well and also have the power/pace up top to score and create problems against anyone. They'll take some stopping.

Yeah, they never looked troubled did they. Very efficient and just got the job done, but with the talent they have you always feel they could step it up.

But in knockout football anything can happen. I think they'll win it, but it only takes one obdurate defensive performance and a French off-day to take the game to penalties.

Totally agree.

I think it'll take a monumental effort by another team with maybe a piece of incredible skill/luck or a massive defensive mistake to beat France. Either of those scenarios are obviously possible.

But looking at France, they appear to have the balance near on perfect.

That turn of pace from Mbappe against Hummels last night was frightening.

Every Euro related match thread title should contain flags from now on.

Surprised at the final scoreline, was expecting a higher amount of goals.

I don't think enough is being made of Hummels tackle against Mbappe, especially when you consider his age and pace in comparison.

We've seen the best goal of the tournament and the best tackle of the tournament in the first round of fixtures.
