Glastonbury - the future

Interesting, I'd always wondered why the strokes hadn't played. One of the only big bands from that generation not too despite headlining numerous other festivals.

Having seen them a few weeks ago Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds would be shoe in for next year if they're still touring. Could easily headline the other stage but I'd personally have them headline the entire thing, they are that good.
Seen NC a few times at Glastonbury. Been on Pyramid at least twice if not thrice high in the order but not quite headliner material I suspect now. Also guested during Kylie’s 2019 set. Anyway Nick loves the place.

For me, Portishead and Radiohead are bands that you should see at indoor venues for atmosphere. Would find it pretty dull at a festival.

Have never understood the attraction with Arcade Fire, they can go in the sea with Alt-J
Saw Portishead at the very open Ashton Court festival (Bristol) when it was still free and they were superb. Their heavy bassy sound that day worked. Also seen them in indooors x2 being excellent and dull. Lot depends on what they are playing and how. They go from a big bassy sound to also a introspective feel. The former moves me and the latter has me looking at the exits.

Radiohead were unbelievably good on Pyramid in 2019. Dull they were not. I agree with you about Arcade Fire. Loved their first album but their newer stuff not for me.
i am massive radiohead fan but to me it was good without being brilliant. Mostly because a lot of the crowd were really so indifferent towards them. A complete contrast to 97 where the crowd were really into them. I suppose every band has its summer. i also think Thoms voice is weaker these days on some of their heavier earlier work..

efestivals.co.uk have got Spice Girls as the first rumoured headliner for next year. They are always pretty accurate on that site.

Watched McCartney last night and have seen quite alot over the weekend from the festival and it's got me thinking - they are going to struggle with impressive headline acts very soon I think. Taylor Swift is a shoo-in for next for me, as she was announced for 3 years ago but wasn't available this year, but who else is there realistically?

Springsteen and Elton John are on tour during the festival next year and yeah, Springsteen is always brilliant, but I'm not convinced by Elton John.

Even bankers like Coldplay and the Killers, not everyone's cup of tea but always put on a good show, have probably done it enough times now to say they won't be asked back for a while.

They should throw money at ABBA - that would be ace
Next year will see..

30 year anniversary of Snoop Dogg's 'DOGGYSTYLE'
40 year anniversary of Madonna's 'MADONNA'
50 year anniversary of Pink Floyd's 'DARK SIDE OF THE MOON'

Pretty decent headliners don't you think!

I would have agreed regarding Thom, but possibly with the lockdown break, I think his voice has regained a lot of the grunt he seemed to have lost - some of the songs on the new album by The Smile would suggest he's doing pretty good vocal work there. But like all voices, his will lose something with age.

glasto was so good.... I'm watching radiohead from the nineties
Just had REM on from 1999. Great set and nice to see the band on the TV and not the crowd every 2 seconds.

Went to see them in Manchester the same year, sometime in July I think. Went with the wife, she was 8 months pregnant with our son. She had to leave her seat before the encore to go to the toilet. She wasn't best pleased when I refused to go with her because I knew REM were going to play It's The End of the World.
We're still married though, so no harm done.

And I’m not being funny but wouldn’t that be absolutely ruddy marvellous.

I’m probably alone in this view but pop music in its purist form can be utterly brilliant.

I couldn’t agree more. Spice Girls would be a brilliant headline act.

The headline acts this year were garbage, if this oap trend continues it ain't got a future
Of the 3 headliners, one was literally the youngest ever at 20 and another was 35. So one OAP out of 3 and ask the vast majority who went and they will tell you they witnessed a special performance on the Saturday night from said OAP.

As for not having a future if this OAP trend continues, Glastonbury has traditionally included at least one headliner who was big in the 1960's to 1980's and that act has usually been a massive draw. In the 8 festivals I've been lucky enough to get tickets for, I've seen headline performances from The Who, Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, U2, The Cure and now Macca.

Anyway, regardless of future headliners, the festival will continue to thrive as it offers so much choice and variety. I saw 18 performances over 3 days and only 5 of those were on the Pyramid Stage.

Sorry mate but that’s a nonsense comment. Youngest individual headliner ever and you call it an OAP trend. Theres no question the headliners are getting more diverse musically rather than the accusation of over the hill.

As for the Spice Girls they haven’t had an album out since 1998 and would be more appropriate as a supporting headliner or legends slot IMO.

not sure it's a trend. As for Macca being old yes, but he is a national treasure, no an global treasure, a legend in every sense of the word, and the crowd seemed to love it. I watched it on catch up, 30 mins late, needed to walk the dog. My estate is a 1km circle, during that walk I heard Macca blaring out of houses for the entire walk. It felt like everyone was watching.

Anyway, glastonbury has always had upcomers through to old timers, it's part of the fabric of the festival, and long may that continue. Getting rid of the legends and replacing with the latest new thing would see the festival lose its USP
