McNair - Right Back

Haven't seen/heard anything that Carrick has said, is it true he's said we won't be signing a Smith replacement?

Pretty disappointed if that is the case. Even if Smith was fit, I'd be wanting us to sign an upgrade. He's fine for the most part, but I thought he was getting increasingly targeted towards the end of the season, and he was found wanting quite a bit. As harsh as it sounds, I thought his injury may be a slight blessing in disguise to force our hand to sign somebody.

The options appear to be Mcnair, VDB or Agyemang. Out of those I think it can only be Mcnair. VDB looked awkward v Betis and Agyemang doesn’t look ready to me.

He said it depends on the extent of the injury.

Basically if it's only a few weeks of the season, they'll just plow on through with what they've got, if it's a lot longer they'll consider bringing someone in.

we conceded 3 goals against bradford. If we have ambitions of going up fine wont cut it.

I don't see the problem with fans highlighting why he shouldn't be played in an unnatural position for us, he has hardly ever played there since he has been here and there is a reason for that.

We cant use northern ireland as a yard stick they are awful, recently beaten by finland and kazakhstan

which goals was he at fault for last night?

I would rather discuss which goals he was at fault for last season when he was out paced or in the wrong position. I dont read too much into friendlies and as said that was a second string. I just dont see conceding 3 goals as a fine performance for any defender.

Not always balance though is there..
Well it looks pretty balanced to me. I mean take my point while agreeing that he’s not as mobile as smith (a negative to McNair but positive to Smith), I balanced it out with “but McNair has a better final ball”,, which is a positive to McNair and a negative to Smith. See balanced.

Neither are prime Cafu, they have positives and negatives, which make them suitable for different roles and tactics, not sure what’s wrong with discussing that?! Flummoxed!

Personally I've never booed one of our players, but I like to discuss relative merits and strengths of players, tactics and formations. Not every player is going to make it at this level, some will go down the leagues and some will go up. It's not a personal attack on McNair or Jones, or anyone else. It's about the football, about the ability and about how to get what's best for the team and for the player.

Imagine being Paddy McNair - one of the clubs longest serving players, 200 appearances across 5 seasons, chosen by 5 consecutive managers, wanted by premier league teams... and still called "absolutely desperate" by your clubs own fans.

Imagine watching him for 5 years and thinking he's the answer. You think he's going to suddenly come good? I know it happened for Chuba but lightning isn't going to strike twice.

194 appearances for Middlesbrough, about 5 of them at right back, and he wasn't great when he was playing there.

I like McNair and don't think he's bad at CB for us, but it would not a good situation for us going in to the season to have him playing at right back and shows the current weakness in our squad.

The faster Smith and Dijksteel get fit, the better.

Well he’s only playing there due to a desperate situation. A pretty fair assessment if you ask me. I think he will fill in and do a job, more concerned about Coulson at lb
