Would you have taken 3 points off 5th with 9 games left….

No. I expected us to compete for the auto slots. And at the very least be comfortable in the play-offs and being one of the favourites if it came to that.

Instead we are 5 points off the bottom half of the table, and even if we scrape into the play-offs, and it will be a scrape, can anyone really be confident we can play 3 very good games in a row?

Start of the season we were 3rd favourites to win the league and short odds to finish in the top 6, we should have been in the play spots already, with the squad we have.
We have under achieved, so no not happy sitting in 8th place with 9 games left, and relying on teams above us slipping up.

At the start of the season?

No. It was accepted that playoffs HAD to be the target this year, with competing for the autos as a possible bonus.

I expected us to finish in the top 4. What Ibdidn't expect was for us to have so many shootings in the foot, more than a smattering of bad luck and as many injuries as at the Battle of the Somme.

4 games ago though? Well aye.

Probably not but I definitely wouldn’t think “what a terrible season, utter shambles etc”.
It’s been average but not awful.
In reality apart from the top 4, we’ve been as good/consistent as any team in the league and better and more consistent than most teams over the course of the season so far.
When it comes to supporting a team the phrase “familiarity breeds contempt” is very apt. The teams immediately around us will have just as many weaknesses, poor performances and incredibly inconsistent and frustrating moments as we do, but we don’t see them.

On the face of it, probably yes. Never fancied us for autos and expected we'd be in the mix for playoffs.

That said, I underestimated how competitive it would be for those play off places. Feels like half the league are gunning for one of those spots.

It's clear there's only 3-4 teams with genuine quality this season.

Absolutely not. I would have expected us to have already cemented a play off spot, i.e a similar position to Burnley and Sunderland. Anything less than a play off spot this season is abject failure.

Based on what evidence though? We haven’t cemented a playoff spot by this point in any of the last 10 seasons, we have no entitlement to expect that surely this season? Obviously we hoped we’d have that kind of season but I can’t see any reason we’d absolutely expect to do something we haven’t done since 2015.

It was more pre-season hope though. With more optimism given our position come the end of November. But it's just been disappointing since the turn of the year. I should have known better though.

Yes,

but I’d be disappointed. At the start of the season I was so sure we’d be challenging for an automatic spot.

But no,

Not coming in with the current form.

It’s feels to unlikely we’ll hit a purple patch and go on a streak now. Look how depleted we are.

Be chuffed to be wrong. And know nowt about football, me.
