Would you have taken 3 points off 5th with 9 games left….

How the hell are we still in 8th place??
Well, and a win away from 5th. It is quite remarkable but just goes to show that outside the top 4 it’s pretty even.

You’d have to fancy 3rd/4th to win the playoffs but people would have said that about us in Carrick’s first season.

Based on what evidence though? We haven’t cemented a playoff spot by this point in any of the last 10 seasons, we have no entitlement to expect that surely this season? Obviously we hoped we’d have that kind of season but I can’t see any reason we’d absolutely expect to do something we haven’t done since 2015.
We finished last season strongly after suffering with injuries all season as our excuse for being so far behind. In the summer we didn't lose any of our key players and we strengthened. We have a squad capable of doing what Sunderland have done. Being automatically promoted is hard but we should have been challenging. We're nowhere near and not even any better than last season.

This has been a poor season and there's no way I'd have taken this position at the start of the season.

Happy with the position if we can keep Howson fit. Hopefully Rav, Dael, Luke Ayling, George Edmundson and McGree back after the International break and Iheanacho fit (!) Oh, and Doak back for the playoffs!

No and still not. The amount of dropped points is criminal we should comfortably 4th.
Had this conversation leaving the ground last night. We’ve dropped a lot of points from winning positions, and definitely should’ve won against Norwich and Sheff Wed. Those 4 points would put us in the play off mix. Then if we’d have won a few more winnable home games we’d be sitting comfortably up there with Sunderland.

No, I wouldn’t have taken that.

I thought we would be comfortably in the playoffs this season, but not quite challenging for top 2.

The division is weaker this season and we should really have more points than we have alreaady. We have dropped so many stupid points and lost games where we have just not put up a fight.

Unless we go on a great run and sneak into the playoffs then I put this season down as a pretty big disappointment unfortunately.

I'd expected us to have had a similar season to the one Sunderland's had. I'd thought we'd have remained within touching distance of the top 2 at least for most of the season. I knew getting into the top 2 was going to be a big ask but I at least expected us to challenge for it. We haven't looked like a side capable of fighting for automatic promotion at any point this season.

I'm still of the opinion that if we fail to make the playoffs it will be a massive failure and Carrick should walk.

3rd did win the play-offs that season though - we're playing them on Saturday.

The season has been a disappointment, no doubt about it, but that we're still in with a chance is obviously a bonus considering how utterly dire we have been in recent months. Like the Gazette says, fans have lost belief though. There's no sense that we;ll go to Luton and do a no-nonsense job. More likely, their fans will drive on the home team and we'll fold. Then we're clutching at straws again.

That's the likely scenario. The Carlsberg scenario is we get 4 points, Doak, McGree and VdB come back in two weeks, suddenly we start to click again, we storm into the play-offs as the form team and beat Sunderland at Wembley. Liverpool loan us Doak for another season, we recruit cannily from abroad and are surprisingly competitive in the Prem ("Thiy've been a breath o' fresh air," says Shearer on MotD) etc etc

No, this season has been a huge disappointment, we should have easily got into the playoffs with this squad. The transfer window was a complete disaster and didn't fix any of our issues.

Once again we've got mountains of injuries which means in all likelihood we'll not hit the required form to have any hope of getting into the playoffs.

Another big rebuild this summer..

No.

It's weird because if you then explained the defensive injuries I would be more sympathetic, but my feeling is that we are not lower than I would have expected due to defensive injuries.
