Well, and a win away from 5th. It is quite remarkable but just goes to show that outside the top 4 it’s pretty even. How the hell are we still in 8th place??
We finished last season strongly after suffering with injuries all season as our excuse for being so far behind. In the summer we didn't lose any of our key players and we strengthened. We have a squad capable of doing what Sunderland have done. Being automatically promoted is hard but we should have been challenging. We're nowhere near and not even any better than last season.Based on what evidence though? We haven’t cemented a playoff spot by this point in any of the last 10 seasons, we have no entitlement to expect that surely this season? Obviously we hoped we’d have that kind of season but I can’t see any reason we’d absolutely expect to do something we haven’t done since 2015.

Had this conversation leaving the ground last night. We’ve dropped a lot of points from winning positions, and definitely should’ve won against Norwich and Sheff Wed. Those 4 points would put us in the play off mix. Then if we’d have won a few more winnable home games we’d be sitting comfortably up there with Sunderland. No and still not. The amount of dropped points is criminal we should comfortably 4th.
3rd did win the play-offs that season though - we're playing them on Saturday.Well, and a win away from 5th. It is quite remarkable but just goes to show that outside the top 4 it’s pretty even.
You’d have to fancy 3rd/4th to win the playoffs but people would have said that about us in Carrick’s first season.
