Would you have taken 3 points off 5th with 9 games left….

Lots of good points on this thread we have up to this point underachieved, but we are still completely in with a chance of reaching the playoffs, and a chance of winning those playoffs. I don’t really get the absolute defeatism from many on here, or by fans and podcasters.
We demand determination, passion and commitment from the players, but many on here have the determination, passion and commitment of an invaded Frenchman who’s just been told his lunch is ready.
The time for saying, “it’s been a massive disappointment, a failure, a shambles, I’m bored of it now etc” isn’t now. Do it when the seasons over, before then just support the team and show the same spirit we hope the players have.
‘Absolute defeatism’ is a logical response to our dismal, pusillanimous performances.

I would have wanted to be in the top six positions.. 3 points off 5th with 9 games left isn't a bad position to be in.
At risk of repeating myself....... 3pts off 5th very much IS a bad position to be in for promotion if you are 20 odd points off 3rd and 15 or so points off 4th. Those are teams we need to compete against in a two legged semi - those point differences indicate a large difference in ability. Of course its not a given what will happen, but its a huge indicator.

Exactly. In general you get back what you give out.

On far too many occasions this season the team have thrown in the towel. Been bullied off the pitch or contrived to lose games in ridiculous, blooper reel, tragi-comedy ways.

If some fans have switched off from the relentless disappointment and given up on this season then I don't think they are necessarily at fault.

Yes,

but I’d be disappointed. At the start of the season I was so sure we’d be challenging for an automatic spot.

But no,

Not coming in with the current form.

It’s feels to unlikely we’ll hit a purple patch and go on a streak now. Look how depleted we are.

Be chuffed to be wrong. And know nowt about football, me.
It’s the Boro, better with our backs to the wall and famously always do it the hard way

Thems some big words!😁
Have we really been that bad though? Up to mid Jan when we played WBA we were doing ok, not incredible but certainly not terrible.
We then lost easily our most dangerous and dynamic players in Doak and ELL, had to blend new players into the team and unsurprisingly struggled during a tough run of games. Since then we’ve actually played some very good football in 3 out of the last 4 games.
I think people struggle with moderation sometimes, things either have to be great or sh*te, whereas in reality sometimes stuff is just average.

Do people not remember that we had thrown away games like Norwich or Sheff Wed or all of the others? Our defence, even at full strength, is really weak. We are not only struggling now because of injuries. All season, the way we play, allows other teams to score goals against us easily. There was a period in November when it all looked good for a while and the goals were flying but we still conceded goals in all those games, and it was only 3 games against 3 poor teams. People were talking about how our xG showed that we were just unlucky but we have always conceded goals. We have looked good at times with the ball but we've never not looked terrible without it. Nobody (fans or players) are ever confident that being a goal up would mean we'd go on to win games never mind being two or three up. We have had no consistency whatsoever this season.

The win against Derby was the first time we had back to back wins since November.

To win the playoffs we are going to have to have a decent run to get there and then an even better run against a better team than us to win them.

It hasn't been average. Average for us is different to average for Leeds or Plymouth. Just being average of the whole league is only satisfactory if that's where you expect to be.

It is relative. We've spent roughly 1/4 games in the playoff places. On average we've been 7th-8th. We've hit 5th place twice. If we were Millwall with Millwall's money, I would say that's really good. For the money we spent, it looks mediocre at best.

No.
because overall we are no better than last season since we will finish 7th or 8th. That's because we can't put 3 wins together so, bar a miracle, there's very little chance of winning the play-offs even if we scraped in. Just being realistic.
