Wigan and Sheff Wed to be deducted points next season

Sunderland got promoted instead, Swindon not only didn’t get promoted they got demoted to be replaced by Tranmere, however the demotion was overturned on appeal. Tranmere who would’ve come up as Swindon went down, thus remained in the league below and Swindon stayed at the same level.

Swindon won their appeal
Not quite true is it! They were initially given a 2 division demotion for financial irregularities (illegal payments), they tried to take it to the high court but failed. On appeal to the Premier League they decided to reduce it to a 1 division demotion. They still lost.

It wasn't an independent tribunal, it wasn't for going into administration (which has clear guidance for punishment in the rules), and they only claimed a harsh punishment not innocence.

Wigan cannot claim the punishment is too harsh, the rules state specifically that it is a 12 point deduction, not 5, not 10, but 12. There are two outcomes, they are guilty and get 12 points deducted, or they are innocent and get 0 deducted. There is no scope for anything else....no one has successfully challenged the EFL or Prem League to avoid a points deduction for going into administration.

Cheers El Guapo, I went to Swindon v Boro that year when news broke of penalties that could be implemented & I was approached by Swindon fans to sign their petition, which I did
Didnt realise they were to be relegated too, just not promoted

BoroMart - That’s what I said re Swindon but we posted at the same time I guess - see above. Swindon was financial irregularities (In their case re illegal payments) as are Shef Wed and Derby, therefore precedent has been set and they should be moved down a division as Swindon effectively were by being denied promotion. The Wigan scenario is different as it is about entering administration (though I still worry there’ll be some bizarre fudge that will let them off probably because I always fear the worst where Boro are concerned)

Think that's in our blood El Guapo where the Boro's concerned
I think like life the bigger they are the less likely they'll be punished severely, maybe a chip on my shoulder, I just look at our case v West Ham, we lost 3 points, if WHU were relegated it wouldn't be fair on their fans

Also, it was 1990 and pre premier league so precedent is definitely set for “the league” (as opposed to PL which I understand to be a different jurisdiction when it comes to disciplinary matters as demonstrated by QPR’s and Villa’s overspending FFP misdemeanours)

How can it take so long? The Shef Wed one sounds pretty blatant with the taxi firm and drinks company was it? It is fraud, illegal payments, call it what you want. If there is a single document that corroborates this and it is out side the rules then it should be done and dusted in a matter of days, how can it take 6 months plus to decide?

It seems totally obvious and is completely sickening that they are just waiting until relegation is done and dusted before deciding on a punishment.

The entire thing needs overhauling and controls and punishments happening almost live. If that means the clubs have to file accounts with the EFL every month showing P&L then so be it.

Enough of all the dodgy deals. It is either a free for all, or regulated. Break the rules, automatic 24 point penalty. Try to cheat to circumvent the rules, automatic relegation, to be replaced by the best financially run club in the league below, regardless of their position.

Win promotion? Not signed off and sanctioned till your accounts have been accepted proving that you were within FFP.

There is no FFP, clubs with money do whatever they want, sell a stadium to yourself, invent a taxi firm, pay Wayne Rooney as a coach or whatever. It is disgraceful and needs to stop.

I’ve just been told we‘re getting deducted 12 points for having the coldest ground and nine for the stupidity of appointing Woodgate. Seems fair tbh.

Oldham is also the wettest - the clouds from the North Atlantic hit the bottom of the Pennines at Oldham.

Carlisle's ground is always cold too.

Coldest ground? I guess you haven't been to Ewood or Boundary Park🥶

I'd second the Ewood nomination for coldest ground (just marginally beating the Antarctica Penguin All Stars Select XI ground the 'Frosty-Dome' 😉).

Ewood is like a bloody wind tunnel, many a game I've spent shivering in the stand there, clutching a hot coffee like a life raft in a storm.

Oldham Boundary Park early February 1983 was quite possibly the coldest match on record. I think it touched -52 with the wind chill factor. Monkeys balls were snapping off on the away end terrace. We lost 3-0 as well.
