Wigan and Sheff Wed to be deducted points next season

Was just about to post that, is it fair to apply it next season?

Wigan and Sheffield Wednesday are set to avoid relegation from the Championship as a result of their financial dealings with any points deductions imposed by the EFL's independent panel to be applied next season.

If it's not in the rules then I can't see how it is. And if it's because they don't have time to hear any appeals they're certainly not going to have time to hear any legal challenges from the teams who would have been safe had the points been deducted.

The EFL has issued the following statement that will have an impact on the Sky Bet Championship...
The League continues to receive questions on a regular basis in respect of updates to ongoing proceedings involving the EFL and its member clubs.
We recognise the desire amongst stakeholders, not least from our own members, but also their respective supporters and representatives of the media, for clarity on the current position.
At the point a club is charged with misconduct, it is referred to an Independent Disciplinary Commission and from that point onwards, the format and timing of the proceedings are controlled by that of the Independent Commission.
Our stated position and the policy agreed with our clubs is that we do not pass any comment on these individual matters, other than to confirm the charges at the outset and the subsequent outcomes.

The EFL is committed to announcing any final outcome promptly following notification of the decision by the relevant Independent Disciplinary Commission, giving consideration to the issues raised above and in accordance with its regulations.
Independent Disciplinary Commissions are well aware of the challenges for any club that is subject to proceedings, and the need for clarity for financial and operational planning purposes, particularly ahead of the summer transfer window opening later this month.
In addition, there is also the consequential impact to consider on how any decisions may affect other Clubs within a division who require the same courtesy to plan with as much certainty as is practically possible.
Equally, there are the operational pressures this presents the EFL, in areas such as fixture scheduling in the event any decision(s) change a divisional line-up.
In the specific case of Wednesday evening’s final round of Championship matches for season 2019/20, and any potential impact on divisional standings, relegation will be confirmed for the clubs in 22nd, 23rd and 24th positions in the Championship table following the conclusion of those matches and will be subject to the resolution of any ongoing proceedings.
In the case of Wigan Athletic the 12-point sporting sanction, as a result of the club entering administration, will apply immediately following the end of the game against Fulham but is subject to appeal.

Nevertheless, the primary objective of any Independent Disciplinary Commission is to deal with cases expeditiously and fairly.

We will be providing no further comment on any ongoing proceedings at this time.

well that statement seems to suggest the Wigan one will stand: "In the case of Wigan Athletic the 12-point sporting sanction, as a result of the club entering administration, will apply immediately following the end of the game against Fulham but is subject to appeal. "

Felt sick when I saw the Mail article, but the EFL are still planning on applying the Wigan deduction.

Let's hope results go our way, and we win, so we don't have to worry one way or another.

tbf it was a Daily Mail article so not exacty the pinacle of journalism but I am still a bit worried by the "subject to appeal" part.

The EFL statement provides absolutely no clarity though.

They've basically said that they won't be saying anything, and they'd already made it clear they were going to apply the points deduction, so we've learned nothing new.

Surely, the correct interpretation is that Wigan will be subject to the 12 point deduction (as that is applied directly by the EFL rules and not subject to a disciplinary panel) and if that means they finish in the bottom 3 then they will be subject to relegation. If their appeal cannot be completed before the end of the season (which I don’t see how), then the transfer of clubs will have taken place and they will have been relegated to League One.

I’m not quite sure what the Daily Mail is going on about.

As I have posted a number of times it totally sends out the wrong message, you can get relegated been honest & above board club & then plod about in the 1st division for a number of years, Sheff Weds & Derby will know what they need to do before the season starts, total farce, IMHO mind

Since we are on repeat: "In the case of Wigan Athletic the 12-point sporting sanction, as a result of the club entering administration, will apply immediately following the end of the game against Fulham but is subject to appeal. "
