Who are we all wanting to see replaced in the summer?

Dael Fry is one of those players that when he has an off day, it tends to be really visible, awkward and noticeable. Given the other GLARING deficiencies in the squad, other positions I'd rather improve.

The issue with Fry is he isn't as comfortable on the ball as you would like for Carrick's style of play, but there needs to be a balancing act between ball players and a bit of grit/strength in there, so Fry is worthy of his place in the squad.
There are no centre halves in our squad that don't have glaringly obvious off days. RVDB has the highest ceiling but his best performance at the minute doesn't come close to Fry's best.

And our CH's fitness records are awful.
Lenihan, out for almost a full season: Clarke was out for more than a year and Fry always has spells out injured, every season.

That is also true. Not withstanding all of the above, i think it's patently obvious that our defensive issues aren't rooted in the quality of our centre halves but more in the quality of our full backs, the lack of protection we afford our defence and our inconsistent ability to retain the ball.

To leave:
Greenwood (although for £1.5 million I might be tempted)
O'Brien (unless he improves)
Ayling (old and shyté)
Thomas (expected way more, looks lost)
Dijksteel (never fancied, often injured)
Fry (never does enough for me, got all the attributes, doesn't seem to have the ruthlessness or desire, a new challenge as a more orthodox champo CB might see him flourish)
McNair (probably too much wage, never really cemented a place)
Howson (too old to be counted on, he's not getting better, poor captain, not athletic or physically imposing enough in a lot of games)
Gilbert (waste of money / squad place)
Hoppe (waste of money / squad place)
Bilongo (can't see him making it at our level)

Edit: I should say that this is with a 'going for it' season in mind, if we want a strong push for upper play-offs, outside chance of autos type scenario.

If we want similar to this season, like an about 8th and maybe sneak the play offs scenario with a bit of luck on form and injuries, probably a much less drastic overhaul needed.

I feel there's a bit of a malaise mentally around the squad when we're not steam rolling teams. We lack fight, belief, niggle and a bit of shîthousêry. We lack leaders and a vocal organiser. For that reason I would happily move on McNair, Howson and Fry. A fresh start with a few more experienced, champo toughened campaigners at fullback and defensive centre mid would transform us I feel (as long as they're of sufficient quality and athleticism to implement Carrick-ball obviously).

The finishing touch would be an affordable version of Archer and Akpom (or who knows, the real deal!) to not only carry much more goal threat, but crucially hold up the ball and occupy defenders, creating time and space to allow us to play how we want to.

What he said basically

I can't tell if you're taking the P or not
No taking the P
8 out 8 in of better quality .
The team sheets I did are just rough examples .
VDB , Clarke, Thomas , Bangura ,Hackney , Obrien , McGree , Lath , Jones , Coburn are a decent core .
IMO we need to add to them with better players to have any chance of promotion.

1st team squad
Keep (optional in brackets, they can be let go if we get a decent offer for them)
Dieng, [Glover]
Smith - if he recovers
Fry, Lenihan, RVDB, Clarke
Engel or Bangura
Hackney, (Barlaser)
Jones, Azaz, Silvera McGree (if he signs a new contract)
Forss, Latte Lath, Coburn (possibly go on loan)

Loanees/expiring contracts to re-sign
O'Brien - providing he does well rest of season
Thomas - give him a dozen games to see if he comes good otherwise goodbye
Ayling - if Smith's injury doesn't sort itself out

Wave goodbye
Howson, Dijksteel, McNair, J Jones, Coulson, Greenwood, Gilbert (maybe loan) Hoppe (who he?), Thomas or Engel or Bangura

New kids on the block
Not much showing in the academy. Finch should probably go on loan. I guess Agyemang and Nkrumah have been a bust.

New signings
This should be mostly about "oven-ready" Championship players at or approaching their peak who can step in and immediately improve us.

3rd and/or 2nd choice keeper. Perhaps look at Brynn or Hemming

Right Back. Cody Drameh. Maybe Kesler-Hayden on loan from Villa.

Centre midfield. Really up in the air. Hoping that Hackney stays, O'Brien comes good and we sign him. If not, we need an absolute top-class championship midfielder with strong defensive instincts. Maybe Josh Dasilva from Brentford but I would worry about him not being the same player after his injury. Darko Gyabi (loan from Leeds) to round out the unit.

Attacking midfielders/forwards. If McGree stays we can add depth. If McGree goes we need to add a quality replacement as well. In that case, Sammie Szmodics or Zian Flemming may be options. A Premier league wonderkid to make up the numbers. e.g. Leo Castledine (Chelsea) or Tommi O'Reilly (Villa)

Striker. One from Tom Cannon, Tyrese Campbell, Premier league wonderkid on loan. Don't see Archer being available in the summer but maybe in the winter. Emil Riis may be an option.

My preferred 1st team next season if everything goes to plan.

Dieng
Drameh - Fry - RVDB - Thomas
Hackney - O'Brien
Jones/Forss - Azaz - McGree
Cannon

Subs from: Glover/Brynn, Smith, Lenihan, Clarke, Bangura, Barlaser, Gyabi, Forss/Jones, Silvera, Castledine/O'Reilly, (Finch), Latte Lath

I think that's good enough to get us challenging for the playoffs by Christmas and is a minimal rebuild. At Christmas, then we need to press the turbo button.

Obrien and greenwood haven't done enough for me at all. I know obrien has been injured but to me he seems very weak out of possession. Neither would represent good value for money in fact i think if we signed Greenwood he would be an expensive bit part player we would be lumbered with and struggle to sell.

Greenwood is available for 1.5m, it depends on wages I guess but if reasonable I think he would be a decent investment. My issue with him is in his head. He seems a bit of a loose cannon sometimes and gets involved in on field vendettas and arguments instead of playing the game. If he can do that he could be a very decent player

O’Brien agree weak out of possession, but that could be due to lack of game time

I applaud the use of the term "oven ready"

Thanks Newy ! Welcome back

We've never really replaced Erimus74 from a couple of seasons ago tbh. And if Newy has left permanently then I think that is two priorities to replace before thinking of anyone else.
