This thread brings back some memories...Pears' was my first ever football match(!) Pretty sure Beardsley played (and scored?) Seem to remember Gazza on the pitch as well?
I remember Bernie's, underwhelming opposition though
Did we play Inter twice at the Riverside then? The official opening and Maddren's testimonial?
If anyone has details of Dortmund's team from Mustoe's one I'd be interested. Must have been around the time they won the UCL or leading up to it?
EDIT: Just seen the Mustoe programme, 2000 so four years after UCL win.

What happened after a testimonial match? Expense claim forms would to handed out to the guest players, and according to custom, they would be returned incomplete but for good wishes.

Sampdoria were the opposition for the 'official' opening seem to remember it being live on Tyne Tees?
The last couple of testimonials Colin Cooper and Curtis Fleming were charity fundraisers. The players putting their names to events to celebrate their loyalty and then donating all profits to charities.

I'm sure Beardsley played in Pears' testimonial game as I can picture him in the green striped Dickens awayshirt we had during that season.
I also seem to remember Kevin Keegan playing in the Gary Hamilton game (which as previously mentioned was for the benefit of the poor girl from South Bank? who lost her legs in a car accident).
