What happened after Testimonial Matches?

its usually a testimonial 'year' with golf days and dinners leading upto a end of season or pre season game.

Bernie's was 2 days before we played Hereford in the league cup. Gary Hamilton also had one against Sunderland before the 1993/94 season.

others of late Robbie Mustoe and possibly Curtis Fleming? Mogga's against Celtic was memorable they got the East Stand and both corners and still had fans in our end!

Didn't we play the Chinese national team for someone's testimonial or was it just a friendly match. I remember the announcement of the Chinese team, "Number 1 the goalkeeper, number 2 the right back etc."

Seem to remember Peter Beardsley appearing for a Newcastle XI vs Boro testimonial.
Could this have been a second one for David Mills?
(Beardsley was warmly applauded given that this was end-of-season just before 1986 world cup in Mexico - he'd made the squad)

Also remember a bearded George Best turning up in one (who's testimonial anyone know?)

Quite often standard of football was poor and atmosphere quiet (apart from Celtic game!!!).
Seem to remember lots of 'Show Business XI's' back in the day featuring:
Peter Powell, Me Mark page, probably a few nonces from Radio 1 etc.

They used to be a fundraiser of sorts for the player’s retirement fund didn’t they, they’d get all the gate receipts.

Then wages went up to crazy sums so people started having testimonials and donating the money to charity.

Think they’ve died out a bit now because wages have gone up again to CRAZY sums, and people (reasonably) resent paying £20 to send off a multi-millionaire footballer.

It’s a shame, they were a nice way to salute someone who’s given ten years to the club, it’s a special achievement. Perhaps they should bring them back but for a nominal fee like £2, would be fun.

remember gary Hamiltons v Sunderland ... 1st time in the Holgate and I had been going since 1969 ... it was different to the seats ...

Remember Harold Sheperdson's testimonial. Played against England, we won 7 - 5, and I'm sure Martin Peter's scored an own goal(maybe 2)

Estimated 10k Celtic fans came down for Mogga’s, it was unbelievable really.

wasn't bernie's a 'benefit' game?
Hamilton's gate receipts will have been swollowed up by police costs with the opposition being sunderland.

Remember going to Simon Tracey's Testimonial at Brammall Lane when the Blades played the Boro. Cant be many 'away day' testimonials?

Im sure Beardsley may have played in Pears Testimonial wasnt it a Robbo 11 vs ex Boro 11 + guests?
