Tory leadership candidates

i am amazed with these candidates the tories think a further lurch to the right is what the electrotate want. truss mordant even rishi its electoral suicide

They aren't concerned about the electorate, they are concerned with the membership who have the final say on who will be our Prime Minister and the policies they expect to see from his/her Government. The membership, until a few years ago, numbered less than 90,000 it was thought. These were overwhelmingly over 60's, white, well off, home counties types. Probably an equal amount were the more traditional One Nation Centre Right Tories rather than further Right. The success of Thatcher and her idolisation probably led to a slight shift or influx of those more to the Right, but her cabinets were fairly well balanced and for every subsequent Michael Howard and IDS there was a Major, Hague and Cameron. So it was probably balance enough to hold the Right Wing in check. The Tories even on the far Right, because being in power is their overriding concern, would temper many of their ideological drivers with practicality and pragmatism to stay in power.

Brexit has changed this.

While Farage and Tice were pushing the Tories to shift externally, Aaron Banks and Vote Leave encouraged UKIPPers to join the Conservatives so that they could have their say on deselecting Remainers and on who would takeover from May to deliver the Brexit they wanted. Theresa May's stupid, hard Brexit wasn't hard or stupid enough for them. Sensible, intelligent, competent cool heads like David Gauke, Dominic Grieve, Rory Stewart, Guto Bebb, Richard Benyon, Ken Clarke, Justine Greening, Sam Gyimah, Philip Hammond, Ed Vaizey, Oliver Letwin and Nicholas Soames, Amber Rudd, Anna Soubry, Antoinette Sandbach, Heidi Allen and Sarah Wollaston moved out one way or another.

There were 160,000 members choosing May's successor. Membership apparently stands now at 200,000. The Boris factor, getting Brexit done probably recruiting the extra. UKIP used to have 45,000 members, it now has less than 4,000. The Brexit Party now Reform UK doesn't have members, just subscribers.

The Conservatives can no longer be a moderate Party, they are in thrall to their Right Wing, paranoid, hate filled, ideologically driven membership, whose ethos seems to be anyone like us is good, should be rewarded and obviously deserve any and all wealth they accumulate, while anyone not like us is the enemy who deserves to be punished.

she comes over as a tough scary lady .... think she will eat Starmer for starters ,
haha, she comes across as lazy, entitled and not too bright. Starmer will tie her in knots and she will revert to her natural behaviour patterns of being a bully which won't go down well with most of the public

So where will Sue Ellen Cowerdlierwoman's supporters move? You'd expect they will mostly be hardline ERGers and will switch to Penny Dreadful? which will tighten the top 2 candidates in the next round.

Would expect Braverman's votes to transfer to Badenoch (and ultimately to Truss if/when she gets knocked out).

It's looking like two from Sunak, Morduant and Truss.

Which is kind of like asking do you want crap, excrement or faeces on your burger.

I reckon Bad Enoch will pull out now Suellen has gone. Then the far right can gang up and use useless patsy Brains Truss as a Trojan horse to keep the current fascist junta alive

Could well happen. I think either way the new PM will do well to see the next election (if in 2024), we have seen with the last two PMs just how fractured the Conservative Party is, albeit with different sides bringing each respective PM down.

The ERG/right will not take this lying down and should Truss be as competent as her predecessor the knives may well be out in the run up to an election.

Tories can whinge as much as they like about Johnson's integrity etc but the real reason he's gone is that he'd reached the tipping point where he was no longer viewed as an electoral asset.

It seems appearing on a TV show helps soften the image of Conservative politicians in the eyes of the public, in my opinion Mordaunt has done little, politically, to be such an overwhelming favourite with the members beyond belly flop on a diving show, who'd have thought that Tom Daley's coaching and Angus Deayton's drugs and hookers misdemeanours would have played such pivotal roles in creating UK Prime Ministers.

They're largely more ideological, except Truss, whose exactly like Boris (no idea-ology) but without the personality and smaller t!ts
And whereas the last one was voted in by millions of the British public (Tory scum yes I know...) These ones are being voted in by conservative parties members. People who hate the universe and want more of everything even though they've got more than anyone anyway who feel they deserve it because they "worked hard all their lives"

This is going to be a disaster. I want the old one back. Not so much frying pan into the fire but from the Southgate to the Strachan.

I thought pigeons had good memories?
Not the ones who come to our garden

Peck at some bread then peck at a stick, realise it`s not food and go back to the bread, then go back to the stick they just left without finishing the bread

🤷‍♂️

Edit - A quick Google search though says otherwise.

It’s hopefully going to be the least worst of a bad bunch. My bigger frustration is that the same could apply to the bench opposite (in my opinion). Nothing inspiring in the whole house for a politically homeless centrist. Hopefully some talent creeps through from somewhere in the next 2 years. And we get to hear what plans Labour have to address the mess that will no doubt still be there. I still don’t believe they will need to worry about that though unless the bold move is taken to replace Sir Keir. Nice guy but I think it’s too much of a risk to pin hopes on him at a GE. Convince AB to take over and the Tory’s will probably raise a white flag not long after Sunderland return their count.
