Think ive finally accepted we are a champo club

Did the OP think this when we beat the mighty Leicester or Southampton
Hey jedi.... easy fella....

You're nibbling away at this thread old boy ...its my opinion

Calling it drama intiailly ( which ot really isnt. Its a sober considered opinion ) and the the abive question is a little too nibbly for IBE liking

You're a good poster and opinions are the lifeblood of fmttm

It's where I'm at overall.

Instead of feeling like we're a maligned marooned premiership club languishing in the championship....I don't feel that way as a result of the Rotherham fixtures.

We are a capable championsnhip cub well ran and im ok with it

It sums us up in terms of what we are about and what we are capable of

We lift ourselves for big fixtures but lose that ooooplmph against the supposed minnows frequently and that's our chilled

Peace brother may the forss be with you

In part, some of that sits with Karanka too. Some of the Spanish lads were simply not good enough and caused a huge split in the dressing room.

What still annoys me to this day is we messed about keeping Agnew in charge once AK went. We should have recruited a replacement, give him time to work out what he wanted to do with the squad for the following season. We still had a chance of staying up too.

The appointment of Garry Monk was a terrible one. It just sent us spiralling into bad decision after bad decision, and we spunked a load of money on really poor players.
Yes we had a 12 to 18 months period of being in complete disarray from a club leadership point of view.

A wasted opportunity but there you go.

I have been getting some pelters for calling our Chairman / club amateur. However, that decision alone you highlighted there to promote Agnew into the manager position when we still had the chance was one of the most baffling/ ridiculous decisions ever. It made no sense at the time and it still makes no sense now how an apparent professional setup can put someone like him in charge at that point in time……beyond crazy.

How can you ever be ready to go up? Being in the PL means competing against better players. Access to better players requires money. You can't get money without being in the PL. Therefore, it's impossible to ever be ready.

You have to make good choices when you get access to that money and recognise that even being relegated isn't the end of the world if you can win promotion again. Part of that is probably buying players that are the best in the championship and bottom end premier league so if you do get relegated they don't all want to leave and you need to rebuild. Also, not throwing away your promotion winning squad so they are there to help return.

Doing what Forest did was a big gamble that could've easily backfired (and might still if they are punished for financial reasons).

There's also a lot of luck with timing because if your promotion coincides with established teams having bad seasons then there is a better chance of staying up and getting multiple years of PL revenue instead of just one.

PL revenue plus parachute payments are a huge advantage. Getting them is pretty much a necessity to establish a team as a PL team.

“Being promoted when the club isn't ready isn't a great idea.”

What does this mean you mention forest who bought about 50 players when they went up so how can any side ever be ready ??

We drew with Chelsea and almost took villa to a goal less draw a feat no prem side could do until last week so what does that say.

What is ready???
“Ready” means having the infrastructure in place, the Academy, Recruitment Team, Coaching and Management structure, Scouting network, in place. It means financial and strategic planning in advance and having a short term, medium term and longer term plan in place. It means having depth and quality in the squad.
Common sense.

Although I'll accept we are a Championship club, our ceiling is higher than most if we can just get it right on the pitch.
There's quite a few clubs in our position though so it doesn't take much to scupper your plans.
Take last season as an example. Had Carrick had a whole season then I think we'd be playing PL football now. That's not to say I wanted Wilder out before the season started or that I'd be calling for Carrick to take over. This season we've had a massive overhaul and a crippling injury crisis which will probably do for us. Fingers crossed that we have a full season under Carrick next year with a settled, fit squad and that we make a real fist of it.
There's many clubs in the Championship who's ambitions don't get above avoiding relegation.

Exactly so contrasting our placing in 2009 to somehow justify this odd view of our natural order is ludicrous.

I agree - other than the top half of the premier league there is no long term natural order. We could find ourselves fighting for Europe or fighting a league one relegation in 10~ years.

I do think we're doing things the correct way now - "the Brentford/Brighton way" - my concern is we're a little late to the party and others are doing it too, so more competition.

Links to the likes of Harrison Minturn are good examples - 20 years old, playing regularly in league 2 - low cost/wages/risk.
We could sign 10-20 of these type of players for the one Britt Assombalonga we used to sign.

It's the.hope that kills
Ha Ha, this is very true and I try not to get too up or down about things these days.

I think we're where we've traditionally always been; somewhere between PL and championship, along with around another 15 or 20 clubs. We had a nice run in the PL of course, but that came at an unsustanable expense and once the money dried up we returned to type.

Money rules now more than ever before, and that's making a Lenny Lawrence or Bruce Rioch style promotion practically impossible now.

That's what the current era reminds me of. Generally good entertaining football but regular let downs.
I don't know if the position of your team when you first start supporting them dictates your long term view but those Anderson years dictate my view of the Boro. I will always see us as a competent, top half second tier outfit. Of course that doesn't preclude everything falling into place now and again and us getting into the top tier occasionally.👍

Luton have just managed it.

Honestly I think the penny has dropped today
We genuinely are a championship.club that is well.ran ( mainly.) Of which I am very proud
We are just not good enough for automatic....we are definitely good enough to not be relegated but our next few years will spent judging the season by " how many points we are off the play offs"

Its just what we are

I expect us to dic& Rotherham but why ? Why do I expect that in a league where everyone beats everyone...excepting....there's always 1 at the top who.dicks everyone

We are a champo club.

Likely for a long time and I'm ok with it...

My name is Ian baird and I'm a boro addict I've been clean now for 2 hours...

It's the.hope that kills so I've dispensed with hope and replaced it with an injection of pragmatic realism.

Careful mate. I got dogs abuse for saying exactly this back in August.

It was clear after the first 6-10 games that we were very much in a rebuilding season. Too many young players with little/no experience of the Championship, always going to take time to gel.

But that's okay. We have brought Scott and Carrick in and have a long term plan. We're playing generally good football, results up and down, still can't get the consistency........ probably because of the horrendous injuries that seem never ending. That's football 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️

I'm also very cool with where we are. The future looks bright. The players we're signing are not 30+ after a big last pay day. Finances are.....good?......club is on a good footing.

Might be my age, defeats are annoying for a short time then there are other life things to worry about. I dunno.

We're not going up this season. Be surprised if we make the playoffs......but 2-3 signings could easily change everything. But I'm happy to see that squad develop, see where it ends up under Carrick.

👍
