Its that time again.......

Perhaps that 2-0 defeat at West Brom in February 2023, was the point at which the fuse started to burn out for Michael Carrick and his team? We were not far off Sheffield United [64 points] and could have closed the gap to just four points. It was a shock to the system, that`s for sure.1692981070649.jpeg

But we let in two quick-fire goals in the first half, which meant we had our backs to the wall and werent allowed to get through the Baggies midfield. We had 70% possession, but the Baggies werent interested in giving us a sniff at goal. They closed us down whenever we looked dangerous. It was a really disappointing result as we thought we had enough in the tank to beat them comfortably. As it was, they cemented tenth place in the Championship, just above Coventry City [remember them] on goal difference.

We still had 12 games to go and with the third best goal difference in the Championship - behind Sheffield United and Burnley - there was still a lot of points left to win. We werent finished by any stretch. But West Brom were really difficult to beat. Our team that night included six players who have since moved on: Steffen, Giles, Akpom, Archer, Ramsey and Marc Bola.

Next up, we faced Reading at the beginning of March and thrashed them 5-0 at home. It was the perfect come-back. It was there that Chuba did his Bernie-Slaven [esque] impersonation in the South Stand: passing the 20 goal mark.🚂

Today, Boro are a different beast, with nine new First Team players and three players back from loan [although Josh Coburn has reportedly today gone on loan to Plymouth]. Seven regular first-team players have left Boro since that game back in February. We are in rebuild mode - pushing players, working hard to build that team spirit and integrating players into the core of the squad. Carrick said Thursday he felt Lukas Engel had done more than "really well" in the game against Huddersfield and offered praise to Emmanuel Latte Lath - who proved a danger to the Huddersfield defence, with his darting runs and unpredictability. He came close on several occasions. (y)

Its not easy to suddenly drop into a new team, in a different country and perform! But Carrick believes we have enough quality to take our chances and start notching up points on the board. We could certainly have beaten the Terriers if half of our chances had gone in - including that chance right at the end! It was our first goal of the campaign by "one of our own" Hayden Hackney - and what a goal it was. Carrick hinted that losing goal scorers doesnt mean we need to "replace" "like with like". He expects goals to come from all over the pitch.

Remember this time last year, Wilder was on the verge of getting rid of our "development" players and was eager to exchange young prospects for some old stager`s on big money! Thankfully, Carrick eventually took over, steadied the ship and helped turn Chuba around from heading out the door to becoming the Championship`s top scorer! With the right approach we have the Coaching Team to do exactly whats required. Time to look forward and take with us what we have learnt from last season.
1692982263495.png
Carrick is confident we have the men to do the job and start taking those chances. as of now - there is no sign of any other players falling through the roof-light or names rolling off Keith Lamb`s fax machine. Its not the time to panic. There is a long, long, season ahead of us and there will be many twists and turns along the way. Last season was something we`ve learned from and Carrick was clear that he recognises the issues relying on loan players - preferring to build the team on solid foundations - going into next season [!] as well as this.

1692983768118.png
Anyone who keeps an eye on the U21`s and U18`s will know we have a number of players knocking at the door to get first team and / or loan experience. Jack Hannah has been very impressive recently - carrying on from last season and there has been some excellent performances from Jack Stott [Gone to York City today on loan], Bryant Bilongo, Max Howells and Caine Sykes [Sorry I cant put all the names in here - you`ve not been forgotten].

Its early days also for the Boro Women`s Team who played out a 0-0 draw against Norton and Stockton Ancients last Sunday - in front of a near full house. Great start to the campaign. Its all about confidence. We need to support all of our teams [if we can!].

Forward to tomorrow at a sold - out away end at the Hawthorns. Michael Carrick has obviously been looking at ticket sales - having mentioned the sell out at West Brom and Bolton in the cup. He believes that "connect" between the team and the fans is a vital component to success. Behind the doors of Rockliffe, there`s been another week of hard work, pressure, physical and mental challenges......and may yet be more through the door.....who knows? The games are coming thick and fast. Time to get on with it!

Come on Boro - lets go and rob the "boing boing`s" of three valuable Championship points!

UTMB!

Carlos Corberán discusses Middlesbrough clash & transfer window

1692986347717.jpeg

Carlos Corberán says he doesn’t expect Middlesbrough’s style of play to be any different in 2023/24 despite losing a number of last season’s star players. Saturday’s guests have seen youngsters Ryan Giles, Cameron Archer and Aaron Ramsey, as well as the division’s top scorer last term, Chuba Akpom, all depart the Riverside Stadium over the summer - men who played a key role in helping drive the club up from the relegation zone into the play-offs. Michael Carrick has added a host of new faces to his squad for the new campaign in the hope they can replicate the success of their predecessors, most notably attackers Emmanuel Latte Lath, Morgan Rogers and Sam Silvera, defenders Lukas Engel and Rav van den Berg and goalkeeper Seny Dieng. But despite the visitors having a new-look XI, Corberán is expecting Boro to still be one of the Sky Bet Championship’s most dangerous teams this year and says this weekend’s clash will be a “very competitive” one.

1692986432824.jpeg

The boss said: “Middlesbrough have a very good coach who showed what level he is working at last season.

“It’s going to be a very competitive game between two teams who have very competitive teams, that’s for sure.

“Both teams have the full desire to win the football game, but as always, we are going to be focused on ourselves and we want a repeat of the result we got against Swansea in our last game at The Hawthorns.

“Middlesbrough are going to be a dangerous team in the Championship this season, just as they were last year under Michael Carrick.

“It’s true that they have lost some of the players they had last season. The new players have arrived and they’ve got to do the job the players who have left did. Some of them played against Huddersfield last weekend and now they’ve had a full week of training for our game, so they’ll be ready.

“We are going to see a new Middlesbrough team, but with the same style of play as what we saw last season.

“It’s a very challenging and a very important game.”

Corberán has also been speaking about his hopes for the final week of the summer transfer window.
The Spaniard insists the aim is to “strengthen the squad” and says the club must be prepared to react to the market and different scenarios.

“We are ready for everything that might happen.

“We can still go to the market to strengthen the squad. We need to be ready to solve any type of circumstance that may change our plans.

“In the last week of the market, anything can happen. We need to be ready to strengthen the squad and finish the market in a positive way.

“It’s been a different window for West Bromwich Albion compared to previous seasons. Normally this club goes to the market, but we shared our plans with the supporters and everyone and we told them that this window would be a different one and a challenging one.

“However, we need to give our best to tackle the challenges we have.

1692986512452.jpeg

“Unfortunately, sometimes, I do not know what can happen. I say unfortunately because I would like to control what happens, but there are certain things that I cannot control.

“What I know is that we are going to need one player as a minimum to strengthen our squad, or two players. This is, for me, how we will cover all of the needs that we have.

“We need to improve in one or two positions.

“We need to see what happens in the market and react in a positive way in order to have as much of a competitive squad as possible.

“We know what we need as a club and we need to try and achieve what we want.

“The target is always, and has always been, to strengthen our squad.”

Flash Back:

West Bromwich missed a chance to move into the Premier League's top six when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Middlesbrough

West Bromwich Albion missed a chance to move into the Premier League’s top six when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Middlesbrough on Sunday despite making the better opportunities in a dull game.

Albion were the more progressive side but visiting goalkeeper Brad Guzan saved comfortably from James McClean and defender Brendan Galloway.

The home side might have had a penalty when striker Salomon Rondon clearly had his shirt held by Ben Gibson and Albion’s Craig Dawson headed narrowly wide from a corner in the second half.

Middlesbrough, promoted last season under Spaniard Aitor Karanka, took 73 minutes to have a shot on target but held on to maintain their unbeaten record after three games.

That took them into joint sixth place with Tottenham, ahead of the later game between Manchester City and West Ham.

It was a generally solid performance but one lacking attacking threat, despite the vigorous efforts of Alvaro Negredo, the former Manchester City striker signed on a season’s loan from Valencia.

He set up the one shot on goal, by Cristhian Stuani.

“It was an important point,” Karanka told Sky Sports.

“West Brom is a difficult place so I am pleased with the players. The discipline was good and the second half in particular it was not easy to play the way we wanted.”

1692987238575.png
Albion manager Tony Pulis has said he wants five more players before Wednesday’s transfer deadline.

“I thought we played really well the first 25 minutes, we didn’t get a goal and then it petered out,” he said.

“We need that bit of quality, we are working hard and hopefully we can do it. This is a great group of players but we are squeezing everything out of them.”

Anyone got any tips for parking?
  • For perpendicular parking, line up your car’s bumper with the closest line of the parking space.
  • Turn your steering wheel, lift your foot off the brake, and slowly pull forward into the middle of the space.
  • Straighten out your tires when the sides of your vehicle are parallel to the lines and finish pulling into the space.
  • Put your vehicle in park and check that it’s completely inside the lines. Make sure you have room on each side to open your doors.

We`re capable of helping players and developing players, pushing them on and getting the best out of them. Now its about doing exactly the same with the group we`ve got now. We don’t [want to] lose them and make them better for someone else. That goes without saying and we don’t intend to do that. But, with the loans especially, that can be a bit of an issue. I feel we`ve got to wait to...enhance our chances this year and maybe going into next year. Thinking ahead with the bigger picture and thats why I`m calmer with how the season`s started.

I`m not knocking the loan players at all. If you have quite a lot that you rely on or are a big part of your team, then at some point, you`ve got to change your team a little bit and that brings its challenges. [That is] fine and you can adapt and deal with it.
We`re just looking ahead a littler more, the bigger picture and trying to make that foundation of the group really strong.

Good morning roofie.

Today is a game you would probably expect us to loose, given our current form.

Carrick had made it quite clear that we won't be so reliant on loan players this season. Good!

I think the core of what we have today has enough quality to challenge for the top 6 but Carrick needs to get the blend right and get them to gel into a cohesive unit.

Will today be that day? Probably not and I I don't think it will happen all in one go. However, we will click and it maybe today.

Think we will get something today. At least a point. The players must realise the predicament if they dont. So fingers crossed a battling performance today.

Good morning Laughing.
Hopefully it will "click" today.

Engel and Lath have only had one complete week in training, but our lads appear to have a habit of making newcomers welcome.
Carrick has seen the positives in our three match start - despite two defeats and only one draw. Certainly there were chances against Huddersfield we could have put away. But there were good performances from both Engels and Lath.

I`m sure we will improve the outcomes of our set-pieces, especially corners! (y)

Interestingly enough I thought latte lath was more wasteful than silvera despite silvera getting all the negative comments.

I also think Carrick will persevere with silvera as I think he will be a better player than Mcgree.

Give the lad a chance. He`d had only three training sessions before the match (y)

Respect to the boro travelling fans today i cant see anything but a defeat today at a bloody awful ground for us.

I think we probably lose today but hoping we at least play well, move the ball around like we did last season and create chances. We will always concede goals but as long as we’re creating chances I’ll be happy enough.

Kinda settled on this season being a transition season where we develop these young players we have and then add to it over the next couple of windows to try and make a push next season. Just need to see plenty of positive football.
