The next James Bond

I hope the go with a woman or someone who is BAME, just to see people get triggered
Funny innit, that barely occurred to me. Suppose that's a good thing. I only suggested Idris Elba because he's super cool, does a bit of action/crime, dresses sharp and boy can he act, seems a natural Bond.

I like Bond films, I look forward to them. Proper "event" cinema. They're massive, they rarely make movies on that scale and budget anymore.

Especially since superhero movies pretty much killed action movies.

It doesn`t look like it will be a women according to Barbara Broccoli

""Broccoli says he's now a more mutable figure than he used to be. "It will have to be reimagined, in the way each actor has reimagined the role," she said. "That’s what is so exciting and fun about this franchise; the character evolves. Eventually, when we have to think about it, we’ll find the right person."

So yes: that means James Bond can be non-white. He can be non-British, Broccoli confirmed. But he can't – for now, at least – be a woman. "We should create roles for women, not just turn a man into a woman," Broccoli said, echoing sentiments she expressed in early 2020""

Never actually read a book but have seen all the movies. The books actually sound terrible. Reactionary, misogynistic garbage from what I've heard.
Enjoyed the 2 or 3 I read but I also liked the tarzan books as a boy and they are mysoginist as it gets. Books from that era reflected that era an era where men worked and women cleaned the step.

It's not surprising really, and, in my opinion at least, it's one of the reasons they are worth reading. They give a completely different perspective from life today.

The wizard of oz is an awful book but if you understand the analogy going on it changes your view of it.

Probably because the character is a familiar, understood and recognised one, and by casting a black actor, or a woman in the role comes across more of a gimmick than as the progress you're talking about.
And you mention earlier you'd like to see it happen because it would trigger people. This just feels like it's going about it in all the wrong way.
I wouldn’t see it as a gimmick, I would see it as a person playing bond. Ye I like it to trigger people because you brings to surface the racists and sexists

I’ll also add that’s part of the problem that bond is white and ‘familiar’

It's funny that you want it to "trigger" people. Why? As you may have seen it'll also upset some fans

Trigger racists and sexists, the more we challenge them and know who they are the more we can try and educate them, if it’s possible to do that

all films upset the die hard fans, in terms of the ones who don’t think they are true of the books

what back story do you think needs protecting.

My wife couldn't understand why in house house was played by a British actor taking a yank accent, why not just have him as a British doctor working in an american hospital. She is right. And the reason, they didn't want to turn off American audiences by having a britt play a brit doctor on us show.

The same applies here to a certain extent. People who read want the movies to reflect the characters they read about and there is nothing wrong with that. Bond isn't a movie franchise its a literary one.

It doesn't, but you're stating Bond being white is a problem despite the character being white.

I don't think the back story needs "protecting" I just acknoweldge it's existence. As do you. In the same way you say "why should a BAME actor or woman not play Bond as it's an established and known role. It IS an established and known role. With a known backstory that would have to change in order for anything other than an older, white, male actor to play the leading role. If the back story doesn't change the lead characters story would look highly unfeasible. Therefore it WOULD look like a gimmick. Would look like it's been done to virtue signal and not actually portray a story.

I have no issue with 007 being black, or a woman and this would also achieve your antagonistic goal of "triggering" people but I do have an issue of James Bond being black (maybe maybe not it's improbable but might be possible, But name me a wealthy swiss industrialist AND a wealthy, land owning Scottish arms trader who are both black) or Bond being a woman because I'm invested in the character through watching the films.

the character was created in 1950’s, that’s why it’s a white character. The character is mi6 agent, so it doesn’t have to always be a white male. I don’t see why anyone would think that

So what is the problem you're referring to exactly? Define it, as you've not actually explained it and I may have picked you up wrong here.

Because the book tells us so. You could have a 007 who was a women or black or gay but not a James bond.

Thanks, good point I'll check them out. Do you recommend just starting at Casino Royale and rattling through them or are there ones which are must reads?
