It'll ruin the franchise though. Bond has a clear back story.

It's very unlikely that a half Swiss, half Scottish, Eton educated former commander in the Royal Navy in the fifties will be anything but a white male. I'm not against it and Elba would be an awesome Bond but it would be the end of the franchise.

The world has moved on significantly since the 50’s and bond has always been brought into the modern world with each version of them. If the world truly wants to progress and help change then having a BAME person playing would actually be quite important. It’s not about ticking boxes either.

To be honest I doubt even today there are many black or female commanders in the Navy. I take your point and maybe
we need to change the series to 007 and then you can have a black female doing the role. It wouldn't be James Bond though. Let's just use 007 as the template

Why couldn’t it be James Bond? Films are only interpretations of books

Like you say there probably isn’t many commanders who aren’t male white, if James Bond is female or BAME it might influence people unconscious bias, not only in the armed forces but in boardrooms as well

So why not create a new action thriller spy franchise and give that character their own identity, personality and background?
 
Size doesn't seem to be an issue. The other night watched Matt Damon as Francois Pienaar. Dodgy accents not a problem either, going by that.

Because bond is a well established one already, I don’t see why it would bother anyone who played ‘bond’ as it’s changed hands so many times already

* Fettes educated (Like Tony Blair). He only spent a brief time at Eton in the books.

Probably because the character is a familiar, understood and recognised one, and by casting a black actor, or a woman in the role comes across more of a gimmick than as the progress you're talking about.
And you mention earlier you'd like to see it happen because it would trigger people. This just feels like it's going about it in all the wrong way.

Eton briefly but mainly Fettes College.

It's not pc to say so, but Bond is a white male and should stay as such.

Actually I think the whole thing is long past its sell by date and should join the Carry On movies in the history of British cinema.
 
In the books he also smoked over 100 cigarettes a day, I don't suppose that has been portrayed in the films.

Never seen a bond movie and have no real wish to. Read a couple of Fleming books though.

I get @GazC_MFC comments about the world moving on. Howevere Bond is an established fictional character. The reason you think a BAME or female actor should play, specifically, Bond rather than 007 are the exact same reasons I don't think they should

Never actually read a book but have seen all the movies. The books actually sound terrible. Reactionary, misogynistic garbage from what I've heard.
