The Government plans to bring in photo ID for elections

The actions of an insecure government.

I know a few on here think I’m way off course but I don’t think it would take too much to sink this lot over the next few years when the bad news starts piling up.

It’s volatile.

When you consider how many people have still not managed to grasp that a mask can cover one's nose and mouth simultaneously, I am not in the slightest bit worried that they will actually remember photo ID and turn up to mark a ballot paper with their half chewed crayon and vote for any bad dudes, so the status quo will just continue with a two horse race to see who can repaint the door of the wobbly stableblock.

There is a bit of me which is secretly impressed by the Tory polling operation. They've obviously realised which people are just never going to bother, so don't even try to pretend being nice to them and keep pushing things further and further.

I’m all for preventing voter fraud.

That being said I cannot recall it being that much of an issue in the 20 years I have been eligible to vote.

in fact I can only recall seeing one news bulletin on the subject a few years ago but it was just in one small area of West Yorkshire and nothing was ever proven I think

I think it’s one of those conspiracy theory things which Tories use to explain why London are so dominant in places like London.

The majority of people without photo ID are the poorest in society and therefore much less likely to be Tory voters. Those beneath the poverty line are far less likely to drive or have a passport and so this voter ID requirement could potentially cost Labour a huge number of votes. That is the real reason behind it.
those poorest are the working class who are currently voting Tory in the red wall

There was one conviction for voter fraud in the 2019 election.

3.5 million British Citizens currently have no photo ID.

It's providing a "solution" to a problem that doesn't exist and anyone should be able to see the real reason why it is being introduced.
I wonder how much of that 3.5 millions actually vote anyway

Just playing devils advocate here, when I voted on Thursday I turned up, I had a mask on, i provided my name and address. How do they know who I am?
If I know one of my mates doesn’t want to vote what stops me going to his ward and voting again under his name

If that type of fraud is happening, how would anyone know?

I firmly believe that if you have nothing to hide, there's nothing to worry about
I hear this a lot and its about the dumbest argument imaginable. Wanting to protect your privacy and having something to hide are two different things. I don't have anything to hide, but I want my privacy. I don't everyone knowing everything about me, I chose to be part of the legal system, but that doesn't mean I'm going to blanket accept changes that are to the detriment of personal liberty.

If you have nothing to hide, to use your argument, drop me an email with your PIN number for your bank card and pop it in the post and I'll take the rest of the FMTTM crew out on a bender.

I don’t want his bank card. Just his full name, address and mother’s maiden name please?

I have 6 bank accounts - which one do you want?

You see it’s this kind of consistency that shows Johnson is a conviction politician...I mean, come on, nobody can be that stupid to believe a word he says....can they ???

FULL QUOTE “If I am ever asked, on the streets of London, or in any other venue, public or private, to produce my ID card as evidence that I am who I say I am, when I have done nothing wrong and when I am simply ambling along and breathing God's fresh air like any other freeborn Englishman, then I will take that card out of my wallet and physically eat it in the presence of whatever emanation of the state has demanded that I produce it.”

They take your word for it.

If you are not a proxy then you are breaking the law. If you are happy with that and go and do it, then there is nothing stopping you, other than that you might get caught. But in the scheme of things, one extra vote is unlikely to affect the outcome of a whole election.

If it's the odd one then the chances are no one would. But to affect elections you would have a lot of organising to do. And involve a lot of people. And once you involve a lot of people the chances of getting caught multiply.

As someone else said, the opportunity to effectively steal votes exists far more with postal voting than through personation at a polling station, which is the issue here.

Like I say it’s devils advocate. If only life was as simple as taking our word for it

There have been pilot schemes back in 2018 and 2019

2018 Pilot Scheme

2019 Pilot Scheme

There are clearly issues in bringing this in and those concerns are being rightly raised and it is clear that it isn`t as simple as just getting photo ID to be able to vote because as outlined in both the links, there are people who do not have those types of ID (People with learning disabilities, the blind and Trans/Non-Binary people)
