The Government plans to bring in photo ID for elections

We are sleepwalking into a totalitarian dictatorship, especially combined with the removal of the right to protest.

They really are making a long term power grab.

Incidentally, I'd be keen to understand the checks and balances we "voted away" in the Brexit referendum which make these types of moves possible. I'm starting to see the referendum in a very different light recently, which might not have been its original purpose but it's certainly being co-opted to those ends currently.

There'll be many more changes to come too.
Everone of them designed to load the dice in their favour.
It really saddens me that people are willing to sit idly by while the Tories do as they please without fear of redress.

Nothing wrong with this .... I also think we should all have ID Cards - make life much easier

Either purposely missing the point, or not understanding the reason why this is a power grab and a further erosion of democracy.

Either way it doesn't reflect well on your latest 'character' Juninho10

I firmly believe that if you have nothing to hide, there's nothing to worry about

We have passports, driving licence, NHS numbers, bank accounts - they know everything about us anyway

Free photo ID should be a thing already, but I'm not a fan of it being a mandatory requirement to vote.
It's bound to lead to hundreds of thousands, if not millions, being disenfranchised.

You only have to look at the London mayoral elections this year, 114,000 ballots were rejected because people were confused and marked it wrongly.
That's with the current system.

Adding another layer of complexity will lead to more "lost" votes.

There'll be even more who wouldn't even bother turning up if they had to provide proof of identity, and plenty who wouldn't come back if they forgot to bring their ID and were turned away.

But then, that might well be the point.

Horrific policy, I can not believe there is not more backlash over this, they are essentially disenfranchising the working class with this. Having grown up on a Boro council estate I know firsthand many of those I grew up with still now don't even have photographic ID, those who would see showing ID as an issue are likely to be from working-class backgrounds also.

They are taking a page straight from the Republicans playbook and are looking to disenfranchise anyone who is not typically a Tory supporter ie. those not born with a silver spoon in their mouths or too stupid to see through the Tory rhetoric and sophistry.

Like with all policies you need to ask yourself, who does this benefit? is there a need for it? who will it impact? The answer is easy; Nobody but the Tories, no and no. The levels of voter fraud are tiny and almost always picked up on before they can have any impact this policy serves no purpose but to make voting harder for the working class.

Call me bonkers but why can't we just have a system where the various leaders of the different parties are listed on the ballot paper and whoever gets the most wins?

One thing I don't fully get though is why this will benefit the Tories? Won't there by plenty of Tory voters who forget their ID/can't be bothered etc too?
The majority of people without photo ID are the poorest in society and therefore much less likely to be Tory voters. Those beneath the poverty line are far less likely to drive or have a passport and so this voter ID requirement could potentially cost Labour a huge number of votes. That is the real reason behind it.
