The board is a depressing place currently…

Blackburn have done a tremendous job so far this season. There budget will be nowhere near ours, yet they have beaten us at home in the league and knocked us out of the cup, also at home. And sit above us in the league

What is the major difference between the teams?

Is it-there league forms even worse than ours?

To me it’s the other way around. I don’t quite understand how those of us who are saying we have some really good players here, we’ve invested a lot of money, we should be closer to the top two places and certainly competing with the four clubs currently in the top four, our players are capable of more than what we’ve seen so far… are the negative ones, whereas those who say we’re nowhere near the teams above, the team and squad isn’t good enough, we can’t expect to compete with them and we should be grateful we’re 5th, I mean 6th, I mean 7th… we should be grateful for that instead of looking at those above us… they are the positive ones?

We’ve dropped 19 points from winning positions this season, largely due to our wide open set-up and stupid defensive errors. These things are possible to eradicate through coaching and sensible management. We aren’t seeing any improvement though, and this dates back to the start of last season. This group of players can be organised far, far more effectively than they are currently and I personally think there’s more than enough quality in our ranks to achieve better results.

We should be much closer to the top two, top four places than we are currently. I believe we have more quality in this squad than we have seen so far this season but if thinking that makes me doom and gloom and negative then I find that a bit mad tbh.

Like much of modern football, it’s completely backwards.

The squad is playing well beneath its ability and the man in charge is doing nothing to address it either in training or from the sidelines on match day. Frankly he’s been found out, a bit of focus on the defensive side of the game would make a big difference!

I think they are very good points, and I agree with a lot of what you’re saying, we should undoubtedly be doing better, but that’s point of view isn’t the kind of negativity that a lot of posters have.
It’s the whole “this season’s already a failure let’s give up” attitude which is irritating. As poor as we’ve been recently we find ourselves in a reasonable position fortunately, may as well get behind them.
There's definitely some who enjoy it more when we lose, you can feel the glee when they get to start yet another Carrick out thread.
There’s constructive criticism, which is fair and reasonable like your post I’m quoting, then there’s unmitigated myopic negativity that a lot come out with.

There might be a lot of ‘Carrick out’ talk but it doesn’t feel like there are that many who actually want him out now though.

Lots, as ever, discussions about how he is doing - split between those who think ok and those who think ‘could do better’

So much Carrick out talk. We sound like Mackems or Geordies. All this talk of us deserving to be higher up the league than we are. It sounds entitled.

We are Boro. We aren’t loaded. Yeah it would be nice to be promoted but it’s also nice to be financially secure and still in the mix.

Maybe we should judge Carrick at the end of the season. And maybe we shouldn’t be spending all our energy wishing him away so we can jump on the next manager merry-go-round. Jesus, what if we get another Monk? Or some other plank who signs a load of duds and we end up 16th or something daft.

The grass isn’t always greener. Losing ever week in the Prem might not be as much fun as some think it would be. Saying that it is apparent that sitting just outside the playoffs with some new signings to come in isn’t fun for some either.

The last couple of months of the season is going to be a rollercoaster - just enjoy it lads. If we get in the playoffs then we can dream… don’t write us off just yet!!!
I can’t stand the narrative in this OP.
Like Viv says it is that mindset that I find depressingly negative.

Is there really that much "Carrick out " talk ?
It's maybe 10% max

The board is largely divided at the moment with those who think our squad is top 2 and those who think it's an also ran squad.

I haven't heard a single argument to support that we have a top 2 squad. The usual argument is the cost. Even if you ignore net spend, which many do, we haven't spent nearly as much as 3 of the teams above us.

Carrick has had his prize assets stripped in the list 2 Jan transfer windows. Whether it's financially correct doesn't change the fact that it isn't ideal.
I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say we have a top 2 squad, in no way shape or form at the start of the season did we have a squad that could match Leeds, Burnley or Sheffield United.

However we do a have a top 6 squad and currently we are not in the top 6, which means by its very nature means we are currently under performing.

Now come the end of the season we could well be top 6 and then we have achieved our goal, although to be fair on current form that looks very unlikely.

There is no way sacking Carrick between now and the end of the season will achieve anything but if we do not occupy a top 6 spot at the end of the season then I think he has to move on, he has a free hit midweek as I don’t many people will think we’ll get anything at Bramall Lane, then the real run in starts as we only have Leeds of the top 4 left to play.

Let’s see what May brings would be my advice.

I find both narratives a bit dispiriting to be honest.
Those who want to give up/sack the manager, and those with the "we shouldn't expect better" mentality. Boro are a big club in this league, along with a decent group of others, the aim should always to be near the top, we're not the small club some are always desperate to make us out to be.
Equally let's let the new signings bed in, and look to secure a top 6 place, no need for huge negativity at this point. We've thrown away loads of points, and it's really disappointing, we could easily be very comfortable in the top 6. But it could still come down to 3 games in May.
Somehow the manager has to instill a change in mentality,if that happens we could still be successful
