The Attitude of admin…..

Shame, it was an interesting thread that one, as an expat I always like reading other’s experience overseas.

Assuming it was the title and that it hadn’t taken a darker turn that I hadn’t read, I’d have thought changing the title and a quick warning message in the thread would have been more appropriate and less antagonistic. But messageboards are rarely democratically ran so in the words of Mogga - “it is what it is”.

Agreed. I'm sure the offending words in the title could have been X'd out.

I don’t quite see how ‘Johnny foreigner ‘ is objectionable as it’s a bit like saying it’s a slur on all people called Charlie when you use the term ‘cheeky Charlie ‘ . Naturally I’d stand corrected.

We all make mistakes , posters and I dare say admin alike but what I would offer IMHO is to be happy with what we have here as It’s a cracking board and be very careful with what you wish for.

You think how much time , thought and effort by admin goes into coasting this board along and I dare say you’ll sit back take a breath and realise life ain’t too bad .

Being a mod/admin is a thankless task that i Have done before and hated... you never seem to be able to do right from wrong and no mater what you do you always upset someone.

That being said we have one admin here who does a fantastic job.... and one that doesn't

I reported a member a few weeks ago for trolling and bullying... I got my account limited.

When I messaged Rob about it the limit was removed Immediately.

My friend (Warnock's Tizzy Jissue) has been banned (no warning, no account limitation, just a straight ban) on Tuesday night for reporting a person for trolling and name calling... the person he reported has not been punished.

He has tried to contact admin to find out why but hasn't been able to due to his account being disabled.

I have tried to ask the question on his behalf and have had no reply.

@rob_fmttm would you be able to shed any light on the subject?

'jobsworth'. See, if I was seeking to positively influence the actions of admin, I wouldn't have chosen that word.
And tbh it's unlikely I would have enjoyed a thread with that title, so can't really relate to the concept of being unhappy at it being pulled. But if I was enjoying it and it was pulled, I imagine I'd just think 'oh well' and move on with my day. I wouldn't start a whole new one purely to question the decision.
Bit simplistic for you Harry, so your suggesting that it was wrong for me to entitle a thread “ Johnny Foreigner” and so perfectly reasonable for admin to delete it( without explaining what was objectionable).
The title was used ironically, to introduce the subject of the different ways of the world , my reference was how we see “ Manchester” as a bizarre title for a section of NZ supermarket but we don’t bat an eyelid at “ China” as section in our own.
Perhaps you would have enjoyed it more if I had entitled it
“ For your perusal and entertainment, a thread made up of recollections and observances of those individuals who, having toured the World, have experienced the foibles , nuances , differences and peculiar similarities of countries and cultures when reflected upon our own cultural normalities. ”

PS, whilst we don’t always agree Harry, I rarely find your contributions and post anything other than considered, knowledgeable and when appropriate, amusing. Me? I can be a bit Victor Meldrew sometimes , but hey, that’s as it is.

All it takes is a subtle warning or hint from one of the admin to suggest a thread might be taken down, like what used to happen not that long ago.

As others have said it's a thankless task and a job no-one really wants to do. As far as I know it's pretty much voluntary too?

As frustrating as I'm sure it is if you're banned etc without explanation as seems to be the case in some instances, just bear in mind you don't know what someone else is going through. Most people have suffered some degree of mental strain during the pandemic for example. Tempers and patience might be shorter than they once were.

I'm not sure how helpful it is to be starting threads about admin or their "attitude" to be honest, I'm sure it's not the intent but feels a bit like an invitation to pile on with criticism even if some might have merit to it. No one is perfect.

Overall they do a great job, but if there's a specific problem best go to them direct. From what people are saying sounds like Rob is pretty good at responding, but it might not be immediate as this clearly isn't anything like his full time job.

That’s a fair comment but like everything else at the moment , lots of people are on holidays , sick , caring for dependants etc . The guys in admin are likely indisposed of at times they’d ordinarily be steering the ship .

I think some people get too invested at a personal level, especially if someone disagrees with their opinion. It happens on all forums, I'm moderator for quite a popular fishkeeping forum and believe it or not we have the same issues (people can get passionate about fish!).

I've been posting on and off for a lot of years now and somehow have avoided being banned. I can't imagine Admin are banning people just for the craic (it's not in their interest to do so) so maybe those who have been banned need to reflect a bit on how they are presenting on here.

A "Removed threads" sticky with a list of thread titles and reasons would help with the confusion and would probably stop similar posts in the future.
Far too many Sticky Threads as it is but that doesn't seem to be an Admin remit to tidy them up.

I would have thought anyone banned or put on the naughty step should at least be explained why - they might not realise what they have done/said is wrong and if no one explains they'll never understand why.

all these issues being mentioned would be resolved by just having actual moderators rather than saying you’re too busy doing a thankless task to engage with people. You absolutely can edit posts and titles, if admin don’t have time for that, that’s a decision, and there is a convenient rule not to question decisions, but would be easy to have some people that can and do.

All that is doing is driving people away - you want to build a community with these forums but if you look back there are a. Lot of names that have been regular posters that have been banned or left due to go slows. It’s a shame imo because we had to pretty much fight every step of the way to get a platform that isn’t stuck in 1996 for FMTTM and it’s night and day better than the old platform, but you ultimately need a community to keep using your site.

as old posters leave, get banned or even die off, new posters need to replace them and it’s a battle with more accessible social media like tiktoks, Twitter, fb, Snapchat etc so an uphill struggle at all times for the old web forum. Most the new posters end up being CoB accounts on a windup and masks soon slip

I disagree really that it is a thankless task as I see people consistently grateful for robs efforts - and ultimately Rob had said a few times this forum is his main source of income - in that case I’d suggest seeing posters as customers and treating them as such as if you want people to generate traffic, subscribe etc the best way is to engage with them and if you don’t have time to do that, set up a process where others do it for you, likewise doing housekeeping like organising FAQ’s, useful info threads and acting as an escalation point to the admin so they don’t have to deal with everything at ground level.

the fact the naughty step exists, despite being denied for so long, is the worst for me.

but all this has been said before so expect what will actually happen is everyone will be told no questioning the hierarchy and thread locked.

He's questioning the attitude and lack of communication as much as the decision surely?
Perhaps if he communicated with Boro-lad and Rob directly he might receive an informed and considered reply?
Calling people out on a public thread is provocation fueled by inviting opinions of others to become involved [who may be ill - informed or ignorant of your situation].
Dont expect respect if you dont respect others(y)

With respect roofie, if you are going to post on a thread then it's best to read what has previously been said.
