The Attitude of admin…..

Some of us ignored it as soon as they saw the thread title.
Is ignoring something you see as a problem the right thing to do? I’d suggest not personally. The right thing to do might have been mention the potential for offence on the thread at least, or to the OP in a polite private message rather than simply ignore it and nip any doubt or ignorance in the bud early doors.

Was it? Or the posts within it?

The posts I remember within it were all harmless and interesting takes on people’s experiences overseas, I don’t recall anything controversial. I may have skipped over a dodgy post or missed something prior to deletion but my assumption is it was the thread title that was deemed unacceptable.

I can't believe we're still talking about this. This may help, from the Collins English Dictionary:

"NOUN British informal, derogatory
1. a person from a country other than those which make up the United Kingdom
2. a personification of people from a country other than those which make up the United Kingdom"

Bold type is mine. A derogatory phrase describing someone from overseas. That's pretty much the definition of racism. You can disagree to your heart's content - or more probably, discontent - but the dictionary is there, as dispassionate as ever, to solve such disputes.

It's because there is nuance Harry. Groundskeeper Willie from the Simpsons is undoubtably racist, yet it hasn't been removed from our screens. This forum comes down hard on anything whatsoever that could be perceived as discriminatory. They've got every right to do so, it's their forum, and people are free to use another one. If you do take racism seriously you can see why people are upset when things they write are perceived as such when it was not their intention.

Ageism is very much acceptable. Look at the Brexit' threads. On the old board I can remember people looking forward to the over 70's to be passed on by the time of a new referendum.

Yes there is always context and nuance. But I'll give another example. I'm a great fan of Muhammad Ali. There was a famous quote by him about his reasons for being against going to war in Vietnam, I'm sure you remember it. It involved the n word.

Now even though his quote, taken in context, makes clear his abhorrence of that word, if I started a thread with that word as the title, I'd expect it to be taken down. I wouldn't then complain through a new thread about admin not getting context.

If any Simpsons characters, surely Apu.

Well yes and it's pretty much clear to everyone on the board that it should not be used. I think the JF word :D is a good way away from that and is generally used as comedically crass. But it's the internet and we are anonymous people. If Richard little John's using the word we would understand that he was using it in a derogatory way rather than humourous. So I do understand why they take the line they do. It is what it is.

Apu has been taken down already. I've been saying for years there's no way that character would be allowed in a sitcom in the UK in the 90s. Nor do I think there was ever any malicious intention in any of their characters. They use stereotyping for comedy. And due to context it's now deemed unacceptable due to sept 11 and increased racism toward people of Asian origin.

Again, I refer to the rules 1,2,3,4 and 6. I also advised re. the original thread, being more carefull with choice of thread titles. Not sure what the OP here wanted. Kisses on the end? xxxx
