Team for Sunderland

Who would you drop for McGree?

Jones?
Latte Lath?
Conway?
Conway. It's a tactical change. He can probably find himself a little unlucky but i think we need ball players in there to get a better control of the midfield. McGree and Azaz are exactly that. I don't think we need two players that can stretch Sunderland at the back. Lathe will do that on his own.

Too soon for Doak to start.
I doubt McGree is fully fit, otherwise he’d have played a part last week.
I also doubt Rav will be risked from the start.

So I think it will be:
………………. Dieng
Ayling…. Eddy…. Clarke … Neto
……….Morris….. Hackney
… Izzy….. Conway…. Azaz
……………….. ELL

I think it'll be Azaz over McGree, I doubt he's fully fit given he didn't play a minute yesterday, but I'd agree with that team.

I'm assuming that's still meant to be Conway at 10.
I would tend to agree....Carrick gives players every chance....I expect 1 change - Morris to come in - if we don't win though it could be a bench rest for Azaz with McGree coming in aswell as Doak starting versus Stoke for Izzy.
I could be wrong.

Must win? We're one point off the top 6, worst case 4 off after Saturday? Doesn't seem like a 4 point gap would be insurmountable over the course of the rest of the season?

Dieng
Ayling, Rav, Clarke, Borges
Morris, Hackney
Doak, Conway, McGree
Latte Lath
My only change would be Gilbert for Conway.
Conway would be unlucky to drop out, but I'd keep faith with a lad who scored 19 last season and looked outstanding that second half season.

No Azaz please.

Dieng
Ayling RVDB Clarke Borges
Morris Hackney
Jones Azaz McGree
Lathe

Sunderland have a strong centre midfield three. Playing McGree and Azaz will give us more ball players in central areas which will hopefully prevent them from dominating as they like to in these areas.

Doak doesn't get a look in and Conway is the unlucky loser due to a tactical switch.
no idea what to expect from sunderland....they've just been badly beaten by relegation fodder in plymouth so might have a few doubts after that....however, if the atmosphere lifts them we could well be in for a very long 90 mins.
That said, we could easily go there and stuff them. 🤷‍♂️

They fancy themselves as a team that plays football. They're not going to sit in against us, like many do, so should play right into out hands. If we play well we'll beat them. I'm not sure any of their players would get in our starting 11.

It's the top 2 we should be aiming for this season, not just the top 6.

A defeat would leave us at least 8 points off one of the automatic spots, probably 9 off 1st and 8 off 2nd.

That's where we differ then. It's fine to aim for top 2 but if we flip it, do you think not finishing in the top 2 will be deemed a failure?

I'm not convinced the club do.

My worry is the defence, Clarkey I love him, but Rav has to come back alongside him if fit, Edmondson and Clarke together against a pacy Sunderland forward line does concern me, add Ayling (whom I like) but is susceptible to pace too, I am a little concerned and for me Gilbert would offer far more than Azaz out of possession as well as his quick thinking, seeing a pass and a good shot when in possession.

I think finishing in the top 6 is the absolute bare minimum that would be acceptable this season.

Scraping 6th isn't going to be a huge achievement with the squad we have this season.

Agree, think top 6 is probably the target this season, promotion the next.

This page is interesting based on squad value, has us exactly 6th at the end of the window. Appreciate some will be assumption/speculation but the massive gap to the top 2 is one of the reasons I don't think I'll ever be confident in top 2 whilst parachute payments remain as current.

EDIT: The same metric had us in 8th at the same point last year!

They are an energetic side who are happy to concede possession and play on the counter. Very organised under le bris so i think it will be a tough game. We cant take any chances playing it out from the back and must find some way of protecting our left side which has been wide open.

This is what I'd expect. I'd be tempted to throw Doak in for Izzy but we'll see.

Conway and Jones have to start two brightest attackers on Saturday, be good if Mcgree is fit but not sure who would drop out, assuming Engel won't be available but tbh think I would start him over Borges as he gives us more going forward
