Team against Czech

To be fair to Kane, you need players capable of setting up regular chances. He has looked off the pace and maybe could’ve done better with some half chances but the reality is he’s a striker and the players behind him need to be able to create chances and they don’t.

do that and he’ll score. His goalscoring record has been consistently excellent for years now. So I’m not too concerned about Kane. It’s the build up play that is garbage and disjointed

They look like they don’t even know each other. And that’s part of the reason why you don’t play people that are not even in the squad for pre-tournament warm up friendlies

Totally agree.

Southgate’s picking safety first lineups, and you can always justify that to an extent against anyone international class - play Rice & Phillips because Croatia’s midfield is class, play James because Robertson is great, etc.

But we’re creating absolutely nothing.

My worry is he can find a reason to do that in every game, every team has players that can hurt you. At some point when you’re creating nothing you’ve got to go, nah, we’re England, we’ll beat you because our players are better.

For me, pick two full backs who can impact the game going forwards, you’ve got to do something about that central midfield even if it means losing a bit of control - I’d move Mount or Foden back - and I wouldn’t drop Kane, even though he looks way off. Grealish is a must, the only player who tries to beat a man.

But then you look at the power in the Czech midfield and think, nah, he’s definitely picking Rice and Phillips again.

…………….Pickford

Walker…Stones…Mings…Shaw

…Mount…Phillips…Bellingham

……Foden…Kane…Grealish

------------Pickford
Trippier Stones Mings Chillwell
-------Mount Bellingham
---------Grealish
Rashford Kane Foden

Kane given benefit of doubt, lets see if he improves with a bit more creativity in the team.

Not much chance of that team like with Gareth in charge

………….……Pickford………..….
Trippier……Stones..Mings..Chillwell
……………..Henderson ……………
Mount .. Grealish … Bellingham …
…………. Foden……………………..
………………….Calvert —Lewin

need leadership on the pitch - Henderson has to be in for that alone. Walker was shocking v Croatia, Sterling should be nowhere near the starting 11. Chillwell is our best left back and was the automatic choice before the competition- can’t understand why he is being left in the cold? Need youth and lads who play with no fear. Sadly Gareth’s ‘Captain Cautious’ approach means we are not utilising the talent he has available.

Pickford

Trippier
Stones
Maguire (need a game under his belt before knockouts if possibly fit)
Chillwell (game time)

Phillips 1st half then Henderson after half time (game time)
Bellingham
Grealish (free roll)

Foden
Calvert-Lewin
Sancho (needs game time)

Play full on, to try get in front by a couple of goals (if possible) then ease off around 80 mins in the game, concede a sloppy goal and in added time, score an own goal to be sure to draw the game to guarantee 2nd spot. Job done, it’s easy this football lark.

I’d go with that

i’d stick with Kane though, unless he needs a rest for his fitness. He also needs a goal

the annoying thing is in the 10 minutes before he got taken off, he was finally starting to find a bit of space around the box. Then he gets taken off and Sterling kept on even though he was offering nothing at all.

Yeah agree with that. I remember the 86 World Cup, Lineker was rubbish for the first two games then finished top scorer, so hopefully that’ll happen this time!

Pickford

Trippier
Stones
Mings
Shaw

Rice
Bellingham

Foden
Grealish
Rashford

Kane

Kane really needs to pull his finger out though. Sancho first attacking sub if things aren’t going to plan.
I think Maguire may start and i prefer Chiwell to Shaw, other than that I agree.
Grealish 10 and Kane reminded he is a CF and a bloody good one at that.
The clamour for “DCL” is a joke. If we have him and Sterling on the same pitch we literally have zero technical ability from the pair combined.

I must have seen a different game of you thought Sterling worked his socks off

He barely broke into a sprint in the full 90 mins… his first touch was devoid of any sort of skill and usually either missed the ball or immediately lost it to a Scotland player
I can’t believe someone posted Sterling was as skilful as hell. He has the technical ability of Assombolonga. If he couldn’t run fast he would have nothing at all to offer.

Reactionist nonsense. Hes scored almost a hundred premier league goals, 20 odd champions league goals and more international goals than any other England player in the last few years apart from Kane. How on earth has he managed to that with nothing to offer apart from the ability to run fast?
I personally wouldn't have him in the starting 11, but some of the knee jerk reactions towards him are predictable but ridiculous.

Open your eyes.
Playing him cost City the Champions League and will cost England.

But as I'm pretty sure you're already aware I'm not saying England should play him, I'm saying your claim that Sterling has nothing to offer but the ability to run fast is completely ridiculous. Theres players in the Northern League who can run very fast, but they will never win multiple premier league's, score well over a hundred goals at the very highest levels or play dozens of times for England.
Can you make any argument whatsoever for what you've said about him?

He is out of form and has been for some time.

Same with Rashford.

Him and Sterling are good players there is no doubt about that BUT their current form is out of sorts. For that reason alone both players should not be playing.
Exactly, players in most sports have good spells and bad spells, a good manager spots this early and reacts.

Taking Sterling (who I think is a brilliant player) amd Rashford out of the team, along with Kane will hive England a new dimension and will give in form players a chance. Grealish is playing the best football of his career, as is Chilwell amd probably Foden yet our reluctance to play in form players will mean we will under achieve.

Also its not like we play the same 11 every week so Southgate does make changes, just not the right changes IMO

Sterling scored the winner in the last match, and barring Harry Kane and Kyle Walker almost everyone who started last night had played really well in the Croatia game.

You're not going to drop Harry Kane, I don't think it's surprising whatsoever that everyone but the fullbacks started again

I'd actually say he probably should have started Trippier over Reece James as we could have done with his deliveries.

Said this in another thread but the full backs were black holes last night.

In that Liverpool-style 4-3-3 with the two defensive midfielders you need your full backs to be some of your best attacking players. Reece James had the most touches of any England player I read. You could see Scotland letting him, Stones and Mings have as much of the ball as they liked and cutting off supply to Foden and Kane.

Might have been tactical because I've seen Reece James much more effective than that going forwards for Chelsea, but not once did he get high up the pitch, take on his man or try and overlap and cross in behind. Shaw did, but he's not very good.

This is why I'd have played TAA every time. Has to try Trippier and Chilwell next.

For England he has nothing to offer.
He is a very poor finisher, has really poor first touch and panics under pressure. His decision making is poor.
I doubt he will play for City and he will be a flop wherever else he goes.
