Starmer calls for nationwide lockdown in next 24 hrs

Compare today with the first lockdown. Either lockdowns 1 and 2 were unnecessary or lockdown 3 is necessary. Which is it?

One thing I’ve noticed is supermarkets aren’t doing anything now in terms of controlling numbers, in comparison to the first lockdown. I don’t know if it was just because of Christmas shopping, but recent visits have seemed pretty chaotic and I’ve felt that they must be a breeding ground for virus transmission.

Sainsburys still are. It's one out, one in and keeping minimal queues at the checkouts.

Our local tesco has a traffic light system. If we have to go we go very early so I have no idea if people obey the lights.

My missus was in tears this morning at the thought of another March/April type lockdown.
I'm not saying it would be the wrong decision if the government decide to go this way but the collateral damage from restrictions & lockdowns is building massively.

Also we're all pinning our hopes on the vaccine getting us out of this situation, what if the virus mutates and the vaccine becomes ineffective ? Surely after 10 months of this the world has a plan B ?

Alas we haven't even got a plan A 🙈

This is plan B - lockdown, release, lockdown, release. If the vaccines don't work I'd imagine we'd have to expand intensive care capacity even further. Remember the lockdown isn't because the virus is super nasty, it's so the hospitals don't get overwhelmed and then people can't get treatment for things.

By the sounds of it some hospitals are close to turning sick people away.

Masks weren’t mandatory, had this discussion with my wife. We know more about transmission, everyone seems to work with on a max capacity instead now

He’s already said it shouldn’t include schools so what should it include?

Zoos. That’s the example he gave. Bloody zoos.

The Tier systems isn’t working and is totally inadequate, if only he’d had the opportunity to vote against it and defeat the government...

And as expected, as soon as Starmer makes any sort of statement the government response or lack of, he is accused of politicising the matter and that in the ten months of Tory ineptitude all he has done is raised issues because of “party” in issues.

It’s pathetic school playground politics but many will lap it up. The Tory’s are absolute masters of manipulation.

It’s such a dangerous position for the country when the opposition cannot question government policy without this kind of childish counter claim.

To be fair Gonads, anyone who laps that nonsense up is not going to change their ballot paper in any set of circumstances and wiull convince themselves that no matter how bad it is under conservatives, it would be worse under labour.

Please can you tell me where all these Tier 3 areas are that are reducing their Covid rates?

ALL the Tier 3 areas will be going into Tier 4 by the sounds of it - doesn't sound like the rates are dropping...

Children are resilient - this should only be for a couple of months and my the time they have finished school they will have caught up. Not so sure about the parents though! Seems that having the kids at home all the time is driving them mad 😄

Many parts of west yorkshire half half the rate of infections that they had in November. And I can tell you for free that the lack of face to face tutoring has had a devastating effect upon the eduction and motivation of many young people. When I say devastating, I mean no chance of achieving their predicted grades or required grades for FE.

I know, feel like punching myself senseless some days!

I'm off for bog rolls and a Mcdonalds 😂

Jokes aside I'm not sure how the country can manage another total lockdown? I see all my mates stay at home wives and people online saying 'we must lockdown'

I can only assume these people don't work (stay at home mum / dad) or definitely going to get paid whilst off work? I cannot believe anyone who needs to work to pay bills will be damanding a full lockdown.

The effects of a full lockdown for 6 weeks will be financially and mentally catastrophic for many families. I doubt I'd have a company to go back too if they close for 6 weeks. They nearly went under in June.

I understand the concern but still saving lives has to be the first priority, I would even consider delaying education for a full year, maybe radical but what choice is there?

In some ways it’s a no win situation because you can’t have to diametrically opposite things. If you have a proper lock down you have mental health issues and impacts on people’s livelihoods and the economy.
People have proven time and time again that they won’t abide by lockdown rules. I’m starting to realise that this only ends/ becomes manageable when people have been vaccinated. That’s why if it was my decision I would go hell for leather at vaccinating as many as possible as soon as possible at the expense of other things. Just my view.

I'm honestly flabbergasted at the number of people calling out for an even more stringent lockdown / increase in restrictions that anything we've had previously. Is this the general consensus or are the people that don't agree with this view afraid of speaking up?

A proper lockdown like we had in March/April. My neighbours had people round every day, as did other people in the area. How can you lock down when you can't police it? And more people were compliant then, than this time round. People will always circumvent rules and we'll be locking down and opening up again till every single person gets the vaccine.
Agree People are the biggest problem, the vaccine solves this nothing else.

i saw my neighbour yesterday she had an IT problem explained it to me and said “ you can’t come into the. House to look obviously” I was thinking why not you must have had 20 odd people in there over the last week ( not that I would of gone in)
Her IT problem was related to a photo book she was creating about covid fir the grandchildren “you know social distancing and all that” my eyebrows raised ever so slightly!!!
Just at that point I heard the next neighbour me down kids saying bye uncle so and so we will see you on Friday - as another car load we’re leaving.
people are out and out flouting the rules and then have the audacity to blame anyone except themselves!

They are going back up though, not continuing to go down. That's the problem. They reduced due to the lockdown.
